Plenty of money. I spent less than $100 on the before mentioned tank, light and filter. Something like that leaves enough for substrate, plants and some shrimp.

Yes, they do offer a nice package on Ebay. I bought the one with the LED fixture and it was certainly worth the little extra.

oh yeah i forgot about schuber, i have seen the one h2oaggie has and the clarity is excellent. i think that i have seen those rimless in a package deal with the finnex canister and clip on light on ebay before

Check out Schuber-Wright on eBay, they make some really nice low-iron rimless tanks. Here is my journal on Planted Tank. I have one going here as well just haven't updated it as frequently.

Talked to the wife and I might get an ebi and a bag of Amazonia for it. I gotta check the measurements of a piece of drift wood that I have and figure out making it fit. Then I gotta find some moss. I have plants that I should be able to clip from.

Do Aqua is great (moderately priced ADA line) and it looks tight. I imagine your issues with it would be evaporation due to it lacking an enclosed top. We run our Ebi without a top and it requires top offs twice a week at least. With the Do Aqua I would certainly go with a canister as a HOB or internal would both command a huge amount of room. Another option if you are only going to keep shrimp is a simple sponge filter. Easy, little maintanance and only requires a air pump which is easily hidden and tubing is cheap. Being very frugal with feeding would be the key to it being successful, but we use them in many of our tanks and I think they are great. With some creative hardscape and planting they can virtually dissappear and no HOB or canister to hide.

I was thinking of getting Amazonia and will look into the ebi. I saw someone who has a DoAqua 4 gallon on Craigslist.

another good canister, from the reviews, might be the finnex px-360 but they are pretty hard to find locally.

Going for a 4-7 gallon tank - Try an Ebi, they are great in my opinion. The filter is doable, but can be a hassle to clean. Totenkampfs zoomed canister is pimp (I have secretly been trying to justify getting it, lol)
(This is considering OEBT & Sakura Painted Fire Shrimp as inhabitants)

Any thoughts on substrate - Fluval Shrimp Stratum (decent Ph lowering substrate, does not last too long with straight tap here) Brightwell (Great stuff, but expensive), ADA Amazonia (Great Stuff, but expensive). You could do just a planted stuff like eco complete or even carib sea sand if you use mixed ratio Distilled water and tap to lower your TDS. That will make your OEBT's happier, the Neos will do well in anything that is not too crazy low (Ph 6.5 and under I imagine). From my reading OEBT's prefer 6.8 to 7.4 Ph and median TDS, temps should be fine at room tempo, so 68-74 degrees...

filter - Zoo Med is pimp, Eheim 2213 is as well. I use Aquaclear 20's with a sponge on the prefilter. Yank the carbon and toss in a small pantyhose sack of Purigen if you have driftwood in the tank for tannins and you'll be golden

light - I'd keep it at 2-3 watts per gallon. Fluval sells a clip on light that is for the Ebi at 13 watts. Look for something in the 6500K spectrum or I'd try and hit10,000K. Those seem to be broader in color and I like the look for the tanks with those myself.

moss? Java, Flame, Fissidens, Pelia, and any plant would really help. I would control algae via light schedule (8-12 hours a day and reduce if algae becomes an issue.

many people have success with the smaller shrimp tanks, roy and sasha have some nice nano ones going and many of tims are on the medium-small side. The Mr. Aqua and Fluval ebi/floras are nice for the size. I am a big fan of canister filters and have a ZooMed 501 for sale if you get a smaller nano. I had it on a ten gallon and felt i wanted a little more flow that i was pushing.

The tank will be going on a glass topped desk and I want to make sure that I don't have too much weight. That's why I'm going with a smaller tank.

I wouldn't use a U1 (a fluval submersible). Otherwise ATH is pretty much the official on skrimps. From my experience... bigger tanks are better because they are more stable.

I have an ac20 that I have been running or about 2 weeks on my 29 with my 2213 and have a fluval pre filter that fits it so I may use that then.

Yes. I'd use established filter media to help speed everything up. I don't know anything about the filter you mentioned... but you'll want a prefilter.
