Just bought a 15w floramax bulb. I have some HC is it ok to add that while cycling?

It doesn't. I have used it in other tanks and have an extra sponge so I can keep one on at all times.

I'd think the ac20 would be plenty adequate for that. Just don't let that pre filter sponge fall off :)

These are the two filters running right now. The bigger is the double sponge and the smaller is an ac20 with fluval sponge prefilter. I'm leaning more towards keeping the ac20 just because it takes up less real estate in the tank. Thoughts?

I have the red cheerry shrimp in a 20g tall. The tank has an under graval filter and 2 up tubes with bubblers. the Substrate is just white graval. No heater. A few plants nothing else.
All of this is what they say wont work but it does. My shrimp breed and grow.
So I would say red cherry shrimp are easy easy to do....
Good luck with the Shrimp tank. I lookforward to seeing it finished.

Aquasoil and similar types of substrate can be quite dirty when first added, but they will settle over time. As for their difficulty, they are far easier if they are minimally fed and any shrimp need good water quality and stable conditions.

Are you using tap water? Are you thinking about soft (I'm assuming) or hard water shrimp? Neo's should do well and possibly some tigers or bee variant.

How hard is it to keep shrimp depends on the type of shrimp. Some are very resilient and others not so much.

The light is a strip desk light that I had and can put a 15" t8 bulb in. Right now running a cycled ac20 and a marineland i25. I have a double sponge to put in after the water clears.
