Re: Starting a shrimp nano
Try fish gallery for local. I've seen them there in the past.
If you don't mind online ordering, there's plenty of venues.
Pass on the fluval CO2, and get a paintball unit. It'll be cheaper on gas in the long run.

Starting a shrimp nano
Do you happen to know which ones carry them? I looked at them online last night but was sure how good they were. I was also looking at the fluval co2 system for nanos that uses the little cartridges or I found a paintball co2 setup on planted tank. This will be my first high tech tank and so I may just keep some Sakura reds in the tank rather than OEBTs for a few months to get the hang of co2 before putting $200 worth of shrimp in a tank.

I like the fluval 13watt light that comes with the ebi/flora kit. You can even have two if you have enough room. Some LFS carry these in stock.

I need to get a new light for this tank as the one currently on it is my desk light and I need it back for school. I would like to get a clip on light that is capable of growing the HC that I have in the tank. Any suggestions?

Alpha pro has been doing 10 for 100 so I may buy some from them or I'll order 15 from Speedie in a couple of weeks.

And for OEBT, it's going to take a while for them to breed for the people that just got them. I got plenty of Sakura's and Fire Reds right now if you need them.

I have and it is a damn pain in the ***. You get leaks, spills, bubble count is weird, and it just looks out of place. Suggest going to the paintball co2 route if you're staying on low budget. You could pick up those little co2 bottles for aquariums at petco or fish gallery, but they're going to cost a little more for refills and the set.

Been thinking of trying some DIY co2 in this tank prior to adding stock to get the plants growing thick. Has anyone here used the 2 liter bottle method?

No clue. I found it out after it happened.

Makes sense. I did not know about the Amazonia releasing ammonia. Any idea if that is deliberate to make cycling tanks easier?

The Aquasoil that I used was a huge ammonia source. I still get spikes if disturb it. I'm sure the shrimp are more sensitive but I wanted to do a simple test that I had the livestock on hand for but I may go to petsmart later and pick up some ghost shrimp and let them wander in the tank for a while. I am not adding the that will later dominate the tank until I have gotten the scaping stone that I want in the tank so that I do not disturb the soil causing an ammonia spike killing stock. The tank will hold mainly OEBTs, maybe some taiwan painted shrimp (if I can find them for a decent price), and probably some snails unsure which at this point.

Novice here. Without a source of ammonia, won't the bacteria on the filters die off? How long would that take?
Aren't those snails pretty hardy compared to shrimp?

I had two filters one that had been on my larger tank for near a month in anticipation of this build and the other cane with the tank bug I believe it was seeded as well. I also dosed with colony occasionally.

I added some of my mystery snails today just make sure that the water is good for inverts. So far so good.
