If we are going to argue what the definition of success is then why not argue the definition of maintenance. Some may see it as work and some may relish the time spent as it is an intimate time with the tank and when you are most directly working with it. It may be relaxing to some. I think the conclusion to be drawn from both sides is figure out what type of maintenance schedule you can and want to do then plan a tank around that. If you can and want to do 4 hours a day and you enjoy those 4 hours... go for it and call your happiness a measure of your success. If you can only spare an hour a week then plan a tank to that and enjoy your hour a week digging into it. You define the success. Not some measuring stick somebody else is holding.

Sure you can have your own definition of happiness, just so you let it known when you give advices to people new to the hobby.
ie. I do a, b, c, d. on this tank, it's a great success but I also spend 4 hrs of cleaning the tank a day ... Don't stop before the "but".

Rage, I feel that a lot of your energy put into this thread is solely aimed towards discrediting anything posted instead of compiling experiences and ideas to increase the understandings of the dynamics.

I posted what I attempted that did not include the death of any fish nor me having to get rid of any fish due to aggression. Instead, this tank became the dumping grounds for those said fish.

The tear down of this tank did not include any of the reasons that are normally associated with damsels.

I think I've contributed what I can based on my own personal experience to this thread.

If I think a practice is bad, what do you suggest I do? praise it, keep silent or raise questions?

If you think keeping 15, 20 mean damsels in a 10G tank with tap water is good practice and a success, then I don't know what else to say.

It's not just me, anyone can go to google search, type in "damsels" and see for themselves. Of course everyone on all those threads are wrong and you are right!

It depends. If you have a reef then pretty much yes. The light and nutrients needed to keep coral feed the algae as well. If its FOWLR then you have lots of options to control it such as adding certain fish or invertebrates as well as reducing or temporarily removing your lighting. You can also add macro algae to compete with the less desirable algae too.

I am doing a FOWLR tank. I have a hefty batch of mermaid cup algae that I like that I can use and cheato but I don't think is a show piece algae.

As pointed out previously, you opinion on a bad practice is based solely on what you read on the internet and your single failed attempt.

It is indeed the net so everyone is entitled to whatever they may believe is right and wrong and I'm by no means one to say who chooses what. I can only give my input on the idea and how it worked in my favor, even if it went against the grain.


Now if you feel that I'm wrong, then please share how you attempted anything remotely similar, didn't work and why. Let's not leave out the but, a, b , c or d.

Yes, I agree that what I did was a one off and there's a lot of details that have not been mentioned yet but at the same time so does all the "sites" you reference to, heck even your own input on the topic(of the off topic) is formatted the same way.

You're focusing on a single small detail vs the overall.


Just like me giving advice that it's doable and not giving 100% detail, you are shunning a new hobbyist away by giving the worst case scenario advice without going into 100% detail.

The idea usually translates well whether its fresh water, salt water, whatever. Aggressive fish single each other out less in large groups in compact spaces. You have to overfilter like crazy and stay on top of water changes but its doable. Then again, clownfish are expensive if you screw up and they all die. I wouldn't risk it personally but its up to you. Notice the damsels EK had in that tank were all mostly free.

Get RO/DI and booster pump and do the things right. Cutting corners will hurt more in the long run, especially if you talking about keeping designer clowns.
