    Re: Fishing Spots

If you pay to get in the state parks, you're allowed to fish without a license. I'm not sure if there's any regulations on oversized, undersized fish, or if you're even allowed to keep, but you can most definitely fish.

I find this thread very entertaining, but maybe for the wrong reasons. If you want to find fishing spots read this book. http://www.texascoastalfishingbooks....coastbook.html

Most of the spots I fish now came through trial and error. When I got my first car I would go out and fish places with no success. I would focus on if bait was present and that would determine if I would put more effort into learning the area better. What I always tell people that want to go is to have patience. If I didn't embrace those tough days on the water I wouldn't know galveston like I do. Now I have more success because I never gave up on those tough days fishing all day for one bite.

google earth or google maps along with a good tide table has lead me to many a paycheck. everyone here should understand fish habits. use that knowledge and apply to fish feeding habits and look at a map.

Paying to fish in a state park is like a one day permit to fish all laws aply and you can keep what they law say you can. All that info is in the office when you sign in.

I miss fishing the Galveston piers. My fav pier was the one at the end of the old Flagship Hotel (now the new Pleasure Pier?). I learned how to cast straight on those piers.

Trying to get back to the Texas City Dike as well. My dad and I used to walk the rocks on Galveston's East End to the left where the road ends. There was a military bunker there. Reds, trout and big croakers.

I've seen folks fishing off the seawall between the Gulf Coast pier and the end of the sea wall traveling toward the West End. They walk down the steps onto the rocks and cast out.

I caught a nice large Sheepshead 3 weeks ago at Galveston Island State Park in Dana's Cove. He made 2 runs on me about 30 seconds each. If you don't have waders you have to cast pretty far to get into deeper water.

My folks had bay homes at Bayou Vista and Terramar. Jones Lake near BV is swallow but you need a boat. Got into a school of tailing reds one day. Pretty amazing. Smelled like watermelon. No kidding. The smell is from them regurgitating baitfish and shrimp.

Btw, I buy my live shrimp, dead shrimp, squid and ice at the first bait shop off 45 at the 61st St exit. It's the one you have to walk up the steps.

At Terramar there is a Pavillion near the pool you can drive right up to. The water there connects to the main canal that leads right out into West Bay. Caught sand trout, whiting and smaller reds there.

What I enjoy most is flounder gigging at night. My son-in-law and I made some nice LED underwater lights powered by lightweight RC lipo batteries. I gigged a nice 21" flounder last October at Terramar.

Here are a few pics from some of my gigging trips:

The son-in-law and I decided to go gigging last Friday nite. The winds were under 10 mph. That was good. We usually go on a low tide, but this nite we were in a high tide. Water was still relatively low and super clear. Little to no moon. Lots of bait in the water. Didn't see a single stingray...

This is my first report here. My SIL and myself made some diy LED underwater gigging lights and decided to try them out last nite on Galveston's West End. It was my SIL's first gig trip. We saw 2 small ones and let them scoot off. I was a medium size 15"+ flattie and wanted my SIL to get the...

My last fishing trip to GISP.

                              Fishing Spots

Just curious, if I was a new fishing enthusiast and wanted to start saltwater fishing. What gear would you guys suggest?
