      Re: Native Fish collection Trip

i lost some more of the the pygmy but no losses for the last 2 days. the pygmies are eating live baby brine, and frozen cyclops. the least killies keep dropping a baby or two everyother day or so and they are eating anything including flakes. I have unfortunately made some plans i cant alter for this thursday but am planning on going NEXT Thursday so if anyone wants to go speak up by next thrusday, or pm me if you want to go and we can get it all organized. you do need to have a Texas fishing license though so get that if you need to.

          Re: Native Fish collection Trip

If you go out again I would be interested.  There are some bayous near me that are dirt and grass instead of concrete, and I have been curious about trying my luck there, but not being native to Texas - I am afraid of getting bit by water moccasins or other poisonous snakes.  I don't know enough about them to know how to avoid them.

there arent tooo many of those in the city (there are some so you do still need to be careful) but as long as you make a lot of noise the snakes tend to head off. water moccasins are probably the only real concern, and they are mean SOBS. but they do tend to run as long as you dont disturb a nest and they are fairly rare within city limits. lots more of common water snakes and garder snakes.

Garder snakes don't bother me - I used to catch them as a kid.  Its water snakes - many of them are poisonous.  Noise factor is another reason I would rather go with other people LOL more noise and vibration to drive of snakes....

but not too much noise :)  don't want to scare the fish.

Anywhere! Are you near a body of water? If so, check in there!

They're really almost everywhere. Buffalo bayou is a good place to start.

Went and explored spring creek near my house after work today, was pretty cool, brought the cast net I bought to cover my pond with.

caught 15-20 fish, all the same kind.

I'm pretty sure they were blacktail shiners

the biggest was about 3 inches, most were more like 1.5 - 2.

it was fun, cant wait to go exploring back there more.

                            Howdy,

Cooool Strider,  my boys have been catching shrimp in the canal near esle, we had popcorn shrimp one night not enough shrimp so had fish sticks with them.  Did you get your barrel setup?

HLA was talking about having another fish collection in the fall, down past Victora in Goliad.  These have been very successful and the Clapsaddles were thinking about maybe opening there place up one more time for a fish tour.  I will keep you posted when we have a date.  We usually catch many mollies.  Later, ken

man i wish i had time for another collecting trip. right now im short on tank space. when i added dwarf puffers to the tank with the pygmy sunfish they are rarely seen so i think i willset up a small tank just for them. easier to feed that way too. plus i really wouldnt mind breeding them. im thinkin a ten or a five gallon with lots of moss and ferns. and a sponge filter or something very light on flow. there are several places not too far from my apartment that i want to try, but again run outa time. gotta finnish with my new tank still. Sanding is soooooo much fun. I will definately post the next time i will be going to Winnie.

It was fun... I didnt keep any for my fish tanks...  just caught em, loooked at them and tossed them back.

are there any treatments y'all do other then quarantine, before you put wild caught fish in a tank with other fish?

I've started working on the barrel filter, but have been pretty busy and havent had a chance to do too much.  and I still need to find a place to buy PVC bulkheads.
