This is very possible. If Geoff could explain more about what exactly the "residue" consists of, it might help if you were to test.

Did you check the pH? Just wondering because that's usually a good indication of a substance in the water.

You could call the water company to see if they dumped any chemicals or anything in to kill off any bacteria. If you get a lot of rain or if they have some kinda bacterial bloom they will dump some stuff in the water to take care of it. The filter may not have been your problem.

I agree it appears to be a quick death because they retained their color.

The last fish I missed when pulling them out this morning was bleeding out of her gills. I've seen lots of dead fish in my day. I've never pulled one out that was bleeding from the gills. And not gushing, I know dead things don't "bleed" I mean rather that there was a collection of blood around the gills that came off with her slime coat when I pulled her out.

    Plastic and rubber.
I have 2 Rena XP3's on my moop tank and they never smelled like this did. I should've known... I thought I was going to save money by going with this frakkin' filter and look what happened....

Didn't see any silica pack. And I took it apart to rinse each tray's contents off.
