The ones I got were in a tank with some G. heckelli. Those were the ones that looked almost the same, but their heads didn't slope as much as the ones I got.

the heckellis looked almost similar because the water had not been changed in a while and their colors had all faded to a meshed uniformity LOL they are actually quite different once they reach their potential..but you are correct, the heckellis have a much more rounded face...actually the heckelli was not even known as a geophagus till more recently

So do you have any idea what I ended up getting? Imagine a heckelii with a slanted head, and that's my fish.

yea, you got a geo surinamensis. as far as how specific the species is, id have to see it...but they all are almost identical so you might not even be able to tell a difference in them from the ones at aquatic world. I do feel like they have better color though

judging form what i remember seeing at XFP...yours is either a brachybrancus or an abalios...depending on how pronounced the spot is and the coloration...ill put money on it being a brachybrancus however.....and i agree with tater about the suris from aquatic world being manaus...the coloration is very similar to that of a manaus...but he is defiantly right about the brachybrancus

The color isn't very rich on the one I have now, as you had suggested. I was told that's because they're young. If water quality was an issue, then it should color up now that it's in a clean tank.

I'm getting confused. I thought you just said it is a suri.

I guess I'll have to try to get some pics of it tomorrow. I'd like to know what I have.

i thought you meant you got yours confused with a heckelli and thats why i said you have a suri....let me try to lear things up lol i know i can be confusing sometimes cause i ramble...its defiantly not a suri considering there is only once place in the world the are exported form and no one hardly gets them. its almost most defiantly a brachybrancus due to its washed out color and faded spot but these species are known for a double spot as well so its hard to tell...it can very well be an abalios too considering they have a much larger and darker spot and richer color and i know XFP has some like this in some of their other tanks. it could also be an altifron of some type. Im guessing the black spot only takes up a couple scales and if this is the case, then its not an abalios...it is either altifron or brachybrancus...and dont worry, no matter which, it will color up very nicely in time

Okay, I could follow that. Now I'm dying to double check his spot! I think it's bigger than just a couple of scales, but I could be wrong. I don't remember seeing two spots (and I'd think I would have remembered if he had two).

I'm about to go to bed so I'll have to wait until I can get a picture of it tomorrow.

I'll do that. The lights on that tank don't come on until noon on that tank so I won't be able to get a picture until later, but I'll get a pic then. I'll see about taking a few pics of the tank while I'm at it.

The underside is very clean and organized (at least compared to mine). I like those power strips also.

You could put glass doors on that thing!

                            Looks really nice.
