  • From BAD to WORSE - $@#%!^& roofers killed one of our ko

I am so mad right now it's going to be hard to write this without every other word being edited out.  But I need to vent.

Those of you who know me know that I'm pretty laid back.  I don't pick fights and I keep my opinion out of public forums.  I tend to choose my battles carefully.  Something has to be very important for me to waste any time or energy on getting in someone's face about it.  Well, my roofers have crossed a line and God help them when they get here tomorrow.

Okay, let me back up a bit.  Due to Ike, we are having our entire roof replaced.  The crew came out and pulled all the old shingles and tar paper off.  Before they started this work, they covered the pond with a plastic sheet, which I thought was nice.  Well, the crew didn't show up today so I went out to pull back the plastic and feed the koi.  What I found made my head spin around.  Those EDIT took the time to cover the pond, but then just tossed all the stuff off the roof right onto the plastic!  The weight of all the garbage they tossed down caused the plastic to bow in and the end of it slipped into the pond.  So everything they threw down actually went into the pond....tar paper, shingles, nails!!!  I immediately started looking for the fish, and what did I find?  One that was floating, and the rest of them sucking at the pond surface.  Guess why??  Not only did they throw all their garbage into the pond, but they knocked the filter in, which detached the hose from the pump!!  So, my koi have been swimming in trash AND chemicals from that trash AND have had no filtration probably since yesterday!!

I AM FURIOUS!!! :furious:  :furious:  :furious:

That's just plain wrong.  My roofers poked a hole in a copper water line in the attic today and a plumber is on the way, but, no lives were lost over it.  Sorry that happened to you, hopefully they will compensate you for the loss.

Thanks y'all.  I agree that they should compensate for their mistakes for no other reason but to remind them to be careful in the future.  But, in my head, none of them have a future in roofing because I've broken their fingers and they can no longer hold a hammer.

Maybe get a bag of carbon going somewhere on the system. If I had to guess I would say it's more from the lack of oxygen caused by the lack of surface area caused by the tarp on the surface and by the lack of water movement rather than chemicals....but you never know.

Thank you Charles.  I'm going to go drop a carbon filter I use in emergencies on it now.

consider a BIG water change.   the tar paper and shingles both may have oil slicked your pond as well.    the carbon and aeration will help but watch out.    will come help if you need it.   you have my number.

That was the second thing I did...the first was yell for guygeek to come see what our stupid roofers did.  I drained about 300g and the pond is about 500g.  I filled it back up, treated the water and set up the filter again.  I keep going out to check on them, I know they don't feel good because none of them are asking for food.     And, yes, they did oil slick the pond...I saw the film when I was draining it.

do not attempt to feed.   I'm sure they have enough body fat to be alittle hungry and that is energy they need to expend on feeling better.

sure you know that and are just stating that they are not acting like little beggars but I know how coy koi can be.

of course check water surface tomorrow  /   does your pond have a skimmer?    have a free floating one you can use that you can even fill basket w/ media-straw -whatever to help clear surface.

                          please keep us updated.

Nope, you are correct, I haven't fed.  Good news is that they aren't coming to the surface for air anymore, and they are swimming around more than they were earlier.  They are staying pretty deep, so maybe they know that bad stuff is on the surface.  We do not have a skimmer, never really needed one before.  V, I just might give you a call tomorrow if it's not better.

phish, thank you.  Good to know you are near if we need you.  :)
