  • Ok so I have decided on an inexpensive Zebco, I dont want to put a lot of money into this just yet. And I decided on the 808 because I dont feel like trying to learn how to use a new type of reel while I try to learn how to fish in salt. I just think that would be too much of a pain for now. I dont want to tackle too much and become discouraged. So I am gonna ask this question and see what you guys think.

The 808 comes in a Freshwater and a Saltwater version. Are there any real differences or is it just a marketing snow job?

    • There different the saltwater looks to have a different housing, gear ratios are different, seems to be a heavier action rod and theres more line in the saltwater reel 150yards versus 90 on the freshwater

      • Ok thats good to know. I was just checking. I know its not above some companies to put it in a different box and mark it up 10 bucks.

          • thats a good deal on a combo. It will catch fish but after the bug hits you will want something a little better.
As for line. 15 to 20 lb test is good for almost any fish.
Last summer I had something rip 900ft of 50lb off my surf rod. if the line had not broke. Wish we could have just seen what was at the hook....

Well just like anything, once I figure it out I can pass it down to the kids when I decide I need a better rig.

I am assuming you eat them. How do you serve them?

                    • Man I miss fishing for drum. I haven't caught a drum in over 5 years. Good job. I need to get out and soak some bait and leave these trout alone.

Nice fish!!!!!!! Went to SLP on Saturday afternoon and guess we got there too late. I caught 2 large hard heads (fished dead shrimp). We went gigging and only saw 2 15"-17" flounder beds.

We saw several law enforcement vehicles at SLP. 3 wade fisherman were swept out into the current. 2 were saved and 1 drowned.

I like to use 12-17 lb fishing line. My son-in-law and daughter bought me a nice Shimano Saros spinning reel and they put some Power Pro braided line on it. It is as thin and light as my 17 lb braided Spider Wire. I think it is 75lb test or higher. Whatever it is, I got stuck on the rocks 4 times and was able to pull my line out. I could not break it. I have some strong flounder rigs with single hooks and when I pulled my line free I ended up straightening my hook. I have thick hooks too.

I got stuck on some metal structure making a lame cast. I could not break my line even with a rag around my hand and winding that line several times around my hand. This was the first time in about 20 years that I had to actually cut my line. I lost about 30 feet of line.
