They look more like a Calvus from a different region... and the spikey top fins remind me of a scat which is why I like these.
the fish eating part is just a plus for me.
As soon as I brought these two home and did the water change I noticed two more of my big females packing a mean pouch so in a months time it's gonna be a free for all!

trophs are ugly too but a different kind of ugly.
Character wins though... and from what I'm reading about dats, there's very little character.

Yeah I'm sure there's something wrong with the skinny one but I picked the two that were most active and attacking the others.
Got them in a floating nursery and while I was doing water change I tossed in some shrimp pellets and jumbo mysis, the both of them nibble a bit of pellet and tore up the mysis!

All Datnoids are WC. With this, they often times carry gill flukes(Which Dats are pretty prone to as well as internal parasites). One of the two Indo Tigers you picked up, one looks to be infected. The small Dats you bought are used to eating live, but if you want them on pellets, now is the time to start and get any small fish it can eat out. When I got my IT, it was about 3/4 of an inch. At a month and a half, it was nearly 2". I managed to get explosive growth through heavy feedings of NLS and Tilapia and large water changes. However, when IT's reach the ~5" mark, you'll be lucky to get half an inch of growth a month. As they get older, their growth rate slows even more.
Dat's will hide most of the time. If you're looking for a fish that swims around like a bauce, Dat's aren't your fish lol. They prefer low lighting and will usually stick along the tank walls. They are also pretty aggressive. My 2.5" Dat right now, beats the living day light out of my 7" Jardini.Last edited by DTony; 04-12-2012, 06:17 PM.
