Just picked up a Canon 50D kit. Not the lens I wanted but it will do for now until I get a good one. No memory card yet, I will pick up one tomorrow after work. Can't wait to snap shots. Congrats Matt, nice choice.

just practice with the kit lens for now...its a good start...Originally posted by ssrprelude View PostJust picked up a Canon 50D kit. after like the first 500-1000 count or so...then look into what lens you want...
its good to invest some more into lens rather than change the body often...
its the lens that matter the most, not really the body..
and body lose value like drop to the hill...but lens you can really keep the value for many many years...
but second hand lens is a good choose..normal used lens are about 80%-85% of the new lens value...
i dont have that many lens myself...as of fish shooting...i think a marco lens together with a good flash will give you much easier time...daily use wise..24-105L is not a bad choose...its pretty cheap awhile back because its the kit lens of 5d mark2 and a lot of people get the kit and just want the body only...end up selling the lens new for a lower than used price...

Congrats, cant wait to see some pics from it!
As far as memory cards go...I went with a 16gb Lexar Pro 300x UDMA, and also bought a Lexar Pro UDMA card reader.
So far it is very fast...keeps up with the camera no problem and reads to the computer well too.15g column BB low-tech driftwood/planted - Dwarf Puffer Tank :lupe:

With Canon I cannot recommend more than any other lens especially to take fish pictures, the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens. If you can afford it grab the F1.4, but you are looking at the difference of $100 for the F1.8 and $300 for the F1.4... I have the F1.8 and its simply awesome.
The lens I would recommend for walk around is the 24-105L (problem is price.. look for it on Craigslist / ebay etc for used eq... new you are looking at close to $1400 for a new one)
All the money is spent in good lenses... and they will reward you well for the price you pay

that is a pretty good walk around lens in that price range already..Originally posted by ssrprelude View PostThe camera I got today came with a EF 28-135 IS USM lens. I was planning on getting 16g card, I guess I need a reader too then. Thanks for the info.
so i suggest a prime lens would be your next lens...
get a 100mm macro which wont disappoint you...

Big surf tournament going on in North Shore right now. I'm only 6 miles away (turtle bay), but traffic is mad crazy. Waves are absolutely massive. 40ft pipelines! I'll show you some pictures when I get back.300g - Petrochromis Texas "Red Fin" Longola, Petrochromis Red Bulu, Tropheus Red Rainbow Kansanga.
