Re: Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

Ive never kept a tank like this so not sure abotut he caclium buildup, but if worst comes to worst ill just scrap it off i guess.  If I get one i will be looking at the Red spotted newt, they seem to be a bit more peacful and more hardy.

Lighting currently is only a florecent strip and a florecent bulb, as i dont want to add to much head into the tank.

As for tankmates, i think white clouds, and especialy ghost shrimp, would make more of a snack than a tankmate. From what i red you need a larger peaceful fish... something like a gourami, swordtail or such

We shall see what I end up doing with the tank over the weeken.

Horney Toad is a west Texas desert ctreature.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

Those Red Spotted newts are great.  There is no way that I can get their environment to their preferred temperature:  60-74°F for spring summer and reduced to 40-50°F for winter as I do not wish to employ a chiller.   My house goes down to 78°F in the summer but can get in the low 80s while I am out of the house.  I am not aware of any North American species that can hang and live a long and happy life in such conditions.

Regarding fish, if the tank is going to be run year round without a heater (or even run with a chiller) it may not be best to keep true tropical fish.   It makes sense to stock small minnows, that are *fast*, cold tolerant, and easily replaceable in the rare case that one becomes a snack.  Regardless, housing fish with newts is highly discouraged and if it’s attempted proper care should be taken that the newt is not stressed by the coupling.  Plus, there are only a few gallons of open swimming space in there.

I only mention the shrimp as people have had success with them combined with newts.  They are also cheap (if not free) and are easily replaced.

Eastern Newts can live for 15 years in a proper environment so it’s a commitment that should not be taken on a whim.

eww.. sounds like horny toad...  but it looks a bit like those pacman frogs, but with spikes, and they keep it under water... i think they kept it either with these fw prawns or the tank right under it...  right next to the nano section...
