  • Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

Anyone have a small bit of java moss they can spare or know of a fish shop that sells it in the Pasadena area... ive tried petsmart, petco and mylas and none have it. Just set up a cool vivarium and would like a bit to add a bit more color and so fry can use as a hiding spot.

Any other suggestions on a possible substitue to java moss (somethign carpet like or floating that doesnt need much attention to grow well)

    Thanks guys

Re: Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

thanks, so far all i have is a a lone male guppy, hes doing the dirty work of cycling the tank. Still need to get me a few aquatic plants

Havent decided what i want to stock it with just yet. Its about 10 gal of water in it, so i can get too much in there, but it will be a community tank

Salamanders would look good in that set up.

Are you kidding, thet is just the right depth for Bettas to breed in.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

Thanks a bunch guys for the response. Hopefully I will be able to pick a bit up from Wolfbane.

Not too sure what I want to do with it yet, however I was also thinking along the lines of a newt  with a few fish (probably something larger than a guppy so the newt doesnt eat them), would just need to get some mesh to put a full lid under the glass and rearrange the rocks a bit so it can climb up.

A nice betta, newt and couple balloon mollies is sounding good to me

Re: Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

Right on!  Love the tank!  What type of lighting are you using?

I have been looking into a similar stocking strategy.  Most newt’s and salamanders are not at all comfortable in our summer temperatures.  The best that I could find is the Japanese Brown Newt a.k.a. Sword-tailed Newt:

They tolerate *our* indoor temperatures.. from the low 60’s in the winter to the 80’s in the summer.  Can yank the aquarium heater.  They are endangered in the wild but I have been told that you can find domestically bred ones.  Let me know if you come across some!  Appropriate fish for keeping with a newt?  Most recommend none, but white clouds seem to be recommended most often if you have to have fish.  Ghost shrimp come up too.

So the best that I have come up with: a C. ensicauda newt, white clouds, and ghost shrimp.

Re: Wanted: Small bit of Java Moss

That is a great setup.  I saw a newt at fish gallery and fell in love!

With the water being at that level, will you have a problem with calcium buildup?  Is the maintenance on a setup like this any more than a regular freshwater tank?

Keep us posted with your progress....

I use r/o water in my rivertank and don't have problems with calcium buildup.  If I was to keep shrimp I would have to add some calcium so it may be a problem then.  I would say that the maintenance is the exact same compared to a regular fresh tank in my experience.
