Re: Huge Fish tanks on CL

What once a week contact the local fire department and ask them to come over and "test" their equipment...   "looking to see how fast 1000 gallons takes to fill up my fish tank"  The fish will think its a bas *** storm going on :)

Seriously, how long you think with a garden hose it would take ?  "so what I do is take an hour to drain my tank using a Mag-18, but 6 hours to fill it with the garden hose..  and the carbon bottle is being replaced again this quarter because its used up.... hehe :)

I guess we'll also get to see how good the slab is...looks like it should weigh around 6 tons when full and with the stand.

                Derek,

I understand if a tank is cracked. I also realize the coment about fish gallery repairing them they would.

Let think some thinks through here.  Most of thier clients who would buy tanks this large would just get a new ones.

They probably can fix them but the time involved and manpower involved out weighs them fixing these. Plus  take on the liability of  1000 gallons filling someones house or office.   I dont think so.

These tanks are a great price. It would be a big untaking for any or them. Might be worth it, might not

                  Chris,

Yeah it's a huge undertaking to reseal a tank that size due to construction. Plus (i'm not 100% sure) the type of silicone is used may not be something you can buy at Lowe's.

Re: Huge Fish tanks on CL

My question is why cant you use GE II silicon from where ever?   Can you not or is it a bad habit to mix silicons in a tank?  I have resealed a 75g and it was a b...........bugger.  I cant even imaging to think about a 12 footer.  Also depends on the area thats leaking.  This has a impact on everything

I'm not sure if ge II can be used. But unlike most standard tanks with frames.  A tank like this is not something you would want to repair. This is the main reason Deep Sea start using stainless steel brace do to these old tanks (Oceanic) busting seams.

I bet eveyone of them leak at the bottom.

Re: Huge Fish tanks on CL

So your saying that the glass on the bottom leaks becuase the glass bows out and breaks the silicon down over time?

This makes sense becuase the pressure at the bottom is higher. So you are saying that they started using stainless bracing around the bottom or around the complete tank?

I have some ideas on how to fix them but just researching.

You know,  even 75 gallons doesnt look like much in the tank but its a butt load when on the floor. I have experienced this and it not a fun thing.

+1 For no fun cleaning water on the floor. (Or about 100 gallons of water out of the carpet).

Chris -- I would use GE Silicone I not II because II has mildew poison blended into the silicone and if it ever leaches into the water... dead fish.
