  • Have a school FOR a school?

    Good Evening
I am very very new to FishBox, but it was recommended by someone from Craigslist :-) who is a member here.
I have been browsing, but my time is limited lately while I am getting my classroom ready for the new school year.   Last year, my students did some fundraising and purchased a few fancy guppies and a pleco for a 10 gallon tank.  We had a rough start because of the temp changes in the building, but in the end it was a successful tank (temp controlled) with a nice view of the life cycle for them.  I have two 10 gallon tanks up and running (for this coming school year) and complete with water and gravel from the tank here at home (healthy).  I would love for one of the tanks to be cichlids and one to be guppies and prob a couple of mollies.  (nothing in either one yet)
I hate for my first post to be asking.. but does anyone currently have a few cichlid fries or even adults they would like to rehome?  Actually... suggestions would be appreciated... (I have had tanks over the years but would like for these to be special for the kids who have no pets... and to encourage some of my low "reachers")  I can pay if the price is reasonable... I would just prefer to get the fish from people who love them rather than pet stores.  If you would like my school information to verify my story... not a prob ;-)

I have some fry that you can have for your class - Yellow labs. The only thing is this: they will need to be in a tank bigger than a ten gallon (like most cichlids). I am moving a 55 gallon tank to my classroom next week. Just PM me if you want them and we can work out the details.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I'm trying to get something bigger.  I have a 20gallon that needs to be resealed.  If I get that taken care of and it holds, I'll get back with you.  Hopefully I'll get a larger tank soon and can really give the kids something to enjoy.  Lol they think it all magically appears.

I'll have some convict ready in about 2 weeks you can have.  They will need a bigger tank eventually too.  They would be great to have because chances of them spawning are high.  Whole new school lesson at that point!

I think I might be able to supply you with a 20 gallon tank. I will have to look tomorrow & get back with you then.
If you like I can also let you have 2 red melon discus for the 20 gallon.
They are around the 1 to 1.5"

You will need something bigger for cichlids.

I'd be glad to start you with some guppies, swordtails, platties and/or mollies but I/m way down south in Texas City

My wife kept a tank in her class room and the kids did a great job of taking care of everything.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Walter, you would NOT be doing this teacher a favor by giving the school any discus, no matter how small. There is NO WAY a teacher has the time to do the water changes young discus require! Really, you know better! Giving the tank, however is an excellent suggestion.

I'd like to suggest that the discussion turn to what sort of fish, from those offered, are actually appropriate for a 10 or 20 gallon.

Most of the fish offered are too big it seems.
