    Here's my old 10g

there was two HOB but it was empty, only used to break the water surface and for water movement.
All Biofiltration was through the rocks and sand.

The live rock and sand bed is where you beneficial bacteria is. Filters using anything in them is just going to accumalate waste which would fuel nitrates.

Water movement is a must though along with water changes.

    Re: Salt water idea

Just nano heads for flow and water changes. With an AC HOB, you get flow and have a place for media, but weekly water changes always served me better than an HOB ever did.

Not even a simple AC HOB is needed? What would you recommend using EK, just a power head or something?

Yeah I know! My psi was at 35 and I tried going to our main water supply but it jumped psi from 45-30. I looked into a pump but it was so expensive.
