CHICAGO -- Jesse Jackson criticized Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert on Sunday, saying Gilbert sees LeBron James as a "runaway slave" and that the owner's comments after the free-agent forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger.

Shortly after James announced his decision last week, Gilbert fired off an incendiary letter to Cleveland's fans, ripping the 25-year-old and promising to deliver a title before James wins one. He called James' decision "cowardly" and later told The Associated Press he believes James quit during a handful of Cavaliers playoff games.

"He has gotten a free pass," Gilbert told the AP in a phone interview late Thursday night. "People have covered up for [James] for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is."

Jackson said Gilbert's comments were "mean, arrogant and presumptuous."

"He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers," the reverend said in a release from his Chicago-based civil rights group, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. "His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner employee relationship -- between business partners -- and LeBron honored his contract."

Messages were left Sunday night seeking comment from Gilbert, the Cavaliers and James.

Jackson also called Gilbert's comments an attack on all NBA players and said the owner should face a "challenge" from the league and the players' association.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank declined comment.

Jesse Jackson is the problem as he's the ONLY person in that article making blatantly false racist accusations.

I got no beef with Gilbert for being vocal about his feelings getting hurt. I think his letter was on point with how the fan base felt.

I HAD no beef with James either UNTIL he show-boated his decision on ESPN then tried to justify it by saying the ad revenue was going to a charity. How about he just give that same amount out of his pocket and do a standard press-release? That's what a real philanthropist would do - instead of making a big stink over abandoning his home town because he wants to win a championship.

This is why I can't watch basketball. Post Kobe its turned into the "me, me, me" sport. I'm sure some basketball apologists will try and defend the poor dumb defenseless players who are scammed into this tragic life of seven figure endorsement deals - but I'm not biting.

Apparently you dont follow basketball. Lebron basically been pimped by in Ohio because of his skills. Yes he a wonderful player. But, he gave Cleveland more then they have ever had. They had not won a playoff Game since 98 I think. The media hype this since last year. He was courted by several team but at the end of the day a ring overrule money. He owe Cleveland nothing. He was a free agent and could have done as please.

Gilbert problem is that he never went out to bring in any additional help for Lebron. Remember Since the late 80's all basketball championships winner have 2 stars and one support person. The Cavs only had one! So Gilbert can kick rocks for calling Lebron a cheat and selfish player. Had Lebron stayed in Cleveland would he have written the letter?

#1 I think Gilbert was very emotional and his statements were out of anger but I dont think it warranted Jesse Jackson calling him a slave owner.
#2 How did he not give Lebron support? So him going out and getting Shaq, Mo Williams, Antwan Jamison, and etc was not an attempt to surround Lebron with talent to get a ring? If you say no then you are out of your mind and there is no point in discussing this because all of those guys Lebron wanted to come and Gilbert made it happen.
#3 I dont think Lebron owes Cleveland anything he was well within his rights to leave so I have no hard feelings against him. But I hate when athletes are like I never wanted to leave blah blah blah. Just tell the darn truth we all knew he wanted to leave Cleveland, heck I would have if I were him.

1. I think that Gilbert is pissed cause his cash cow is gone...period! Why did he make all these accusations now about him quitting?

The only way they even scored was do to the double team Lebron would get. Support is someone like a Stoudimire or a star quality player. Remember the Suns was trying to get rid of Stoudimire last season. Lebron wanted him but the Cavs didn't have anything to offer.
