  • How to deter a shark...

I'm watching this show on the Discovery Channel I think it's called "When Animals Strike"...
I'd just like to know yalls opinion about this guys advice on how to deter a shark...
I believe his exact advice was to "punch the shark in the nose, if you have a chance...it's best to BITE the shark in the nose. Sharks have a sensative gel membrane in their noses that are very sensitive to the touch...bleh bleh bleh."

I guess that I understand the swift punch to the sharks snout, I guess it's feasible.
    But BITE THE SHARK?
Seriously? Humm...I don't know how I feel about that for a few reasons. First, if the shark has me in his mouth long enough to where I have time to think..."Dang, this hurts...where is this suckers nose, I'm gunna bite the hell outta it." I'm probably in pretty big trouble already and I wont have time to aim my mouth at his membrane filled nose. Second...under the sharks gel-like sensative membrane nose....is HIS NON-GEL LIKE GIANT MOUTH.

What if I miss? And while going in for the "bite", I stick my head in his mouth. I doubt he'd be like "oh, shooot....now this isn't even fair. Hold still while I spit your head out."

Pffttttt....I don't know if I'd bite his nose. What about yall? Would you follow this guys advice? I'd like to see him bite the nose.

It's okay Ek, maybe we can just get you one of those giant coconut shells to roam the ocean in.

Good call. I also learned that great whites actually spot you swimming...swim to the bottom of the ocean and then torpedo themselves up to gain momentum.  8O Skurrryyyy stuff.

So get a wetsuit with spikes and pretend you're a pork-u-pine
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: How to deter a shark...

I have evolved an automatic response to those situations and release a natural shark repellent, causing the water around me to smell very bad and taste worse. This, coupled with screaming like a little girl, makes any self-respecting shark seek prey elsewhere.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

I am to a shark week loser and the chainmail dive suits that shark divers wear do not with stand the bite of a great white shark.  So if you coconut shell flips and you encounter a great white you are screwed.  I agree about the whole biting a shark in the nose!  those guys have got to be kidding.  and they are supposed to be scientists.  that the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

Jet...I am glad to hear that I am not alone in being a shark-week loser.
There is also supposed to be some weird liquid stuff that deters them.
If I'm not mistaken, they take the carcass of another shark and let it get rotten, then they chop it up and steam a chunk of it's meat
with thing cracked out burner...get the liquid from the rotten meat....then load it into a bazooka like gun and shoot it.  8O
I'm going to get a little vial of it around my neck for when I'm bitten.
Then I'll rip it off my neck be be like "smell it! smell it! It's your cousin...smell it!"

lol...I'm not a scientist but I would strongly suggest not trying to bite a sharks nose.
