    Re: what supports your hobby/hobbies?

I'll bump the bid upto $75.

It needs a filter right? what are the dimensions?

Im self employed, contracted through Napa autoparts. I havent really spent a lot of money on fish and equipment, all three of my tanks cost me $130 combined, i had to buy an extra filter for the 29($30), substrates ($15 for all 3 tanks), fish - ive bought about 6 guppies, 2 common plecos, a rubberlipped pleco, 2 peckoltia plecos, 4 platys, 2 Cae, 3 crabs (all combined about $50)
My angels and mollies were given to me, so they didnt cost anything. I traded a broken fluval with jerry for a bunch of nice plants.

So my whole set up cost about $225.

Lets not go into how much we have spent, I think Debbie would have a heart attack if we ever sat down and figured it all out. What I do for a living is, I am a freight broker. Not a glamorous job, but it does buy the fish and sometimes even manages to pay the light bill. Toss in the occasional fish sale and one day I may be able to buy food too.

I've been doing computer drafting for 20 years. As far as cost, I haven't spent 1/3 of what I spent when I had the marine setup. Fortunately my plants grow great in my tanks, and I haven't lost but 3 fish in the past year. Replacing a fresh water angel is alot cheaper than replacing a marine angel!

        55gal planted
        same substrate
        DIY CO2
1 gold, 1 zebra, 4 koi, 2 dark zebra angels, ghost & amano shrimp

i agree this shouldnt be a "how much"? thread cause that would lead to problems.

The thing I like most about my tropical fish hobby is that if I do it right, it will pay for itself.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

No matter how much money gets spent on this hobby, it pales in comparison to what gets spent on my daughter.... sigh ... I guess in the long run she's more important ... but then fish never talk back or date guys named Viper.

It was fun reading what all of you do.  I'm a stay at home mom to a toddler.  I also go to college part time online and work Saturdays at a dog kennel/groomer.  Those Saturdays finance my aquariums, dogs(food/vet bills), and whatever is left an occassional date with my husband.  My husband loves my fishies and enjoys helping pick them out and watching them but doesn't enjoy the maintaining.  He's all right though, he'll drive me all over town just to look at the fish.

Your husband is like mine! He loves to look at them, pick them out, and decorate the tank with cheesy skulls, but he will not help out otherwise!

It's better than no interest at all!  He's picked up some knowledge along the way just from listening to me and stuff like that.  And what is even cooler is he wants to make a wall of our future house an aquarium.  That would be so awesome.  I can't argue with that, especially since HE would be financing that one.  But he wants large fish like clown knives, green terrors, oscars, and the like in it.  I don't know how pretty it could be.  Even if it never happens it is cool he wants that.  When we went to Aquarium World for the first time (about 4 years ago) he was hooked to the idea of a in-wall aquarium.  There's also one at Fish Ranch and man is that fish scary.  It's huge!  The guy working there told me it bit someone so they don't put their hand in there anymore.  Not cool!

I manage a wholesale paper store for the printing and graphic arts industry. I have a 90gal freshwater and will be getting a 210gal next mo. I also have 6 cats at home besides the 75gal cichlid tank at my store. I would'nt change a thing, I think the cats and fish are the only thing that keeps me sane. As far as expenses, my wife knows it cost more than she wants to know so we have a do'nt ask/do'nt tell policy.
