    Re: pouring water to fast?

first welcome to fish addiction, i am relatively new (compared to many here), but my 2 cents is, don't worry about it too much, you seem to not have too many fish for pretty large aquariums, during cycling, you will inevitably lose some fish, and most times you will lose a few fish you buy from lfs, usually the non-corporate lfs (i.e not petco, petsmart etc.) will have better quality fish (generally, not always true), also when you get fish, look at the tank you are buying from, if you see sick or dying or dead fish in the tank, do not buy, ask how long the fish has been in the shop, usually its a good idea once the fish has been there a week or so, this way disease outbreaks can be easily detected, other than that, browse the forums here, lots of good info. and people here are more than happy to help, and over time it seems like everyone has different experiences on the same type of fish, don't sweat the chemistry stuff too much, if you get too technical with fish you can miss the fun part altogether, will stop my babblefest, good luck, keep us posted

And don't forget that many tanks use a common filter system for many tanks.  For example the Petco near me has a filter on the bottom that services all the tanks above it, and on the backside behind it.  So if you see the top tank has sickly fish in it, and you want one on the bottom tank, keep in mind that it's really like they're all in one huge tank.  that's wehn a quarantine tank is really useful.  A bucket with established sponge filter can even serve as a QT, although they're not too easy to see thru to check on the residents.  Still, you can scoop them out into a clear contaner for checking.  This would be better than putting your entire community tank at risk.
