Yes you need another tank for quarantining new fish. Most people use a 10 gallon tank. You'll leave it running whether theres a fish in it or not, unless you know you arent going to buy anything else to put in the tank. You should generally quarantine a fish for 2 weeks. Most people dont do it that long, as long as the fish looks good after a week i'll add him to my tank.

I use a basic dechlorinator from petco. The more filtration you have on the tank the better.  A Rena XP2 seems fine to me on a 60 gallon. You can run multiple filters on the same tank, it'll decrease the amount of times you have to replace filter cartridges.

          Where in Houston are you>

                    Re: pouring water to fast?

Luckily for you, theres the GHAC (Greater Houston Aquarium Club). You'll feel right at home, and its a wealth of knowledge.

Theres a tour of Fish Gallery on Sunday, you should try to make it. Its going to interesting, and hopefully there will be a nice discount for us. The club gets together once a month and we tease each other with the new fish weve bought. We hold small auctions and raffles, we eat junk and get drunk. Its a cool club and youd definitely like it.

Read through some of the posts on this website, the GHAC is basically all the more active people on this site.

Oh,, almost forgot - Check out Mikes Tropical Fish and Pets in North West Houston. Great guy and honest about what you need and what you dont. Bit of a drive for you, but worth it to talk for a couple of hours about fish.

Im off to bed now, got to get up and go to work to pay for my fish.

                        Re: pouring water to fast?

                        Chris's numbers as follows

                        135. 14 Kigoma Frontosa, Clown loaches.  == 135gallon tank holding 14 Kigoma Frontosa and clown loaches.
                        82. 20 T. Duboisi.  == 82 gallon tank holding 20 Tropheus Duboisi
(I believe these are his show tanks.. not all of his tanks... )

Another thing.  Your tank is new... Only do weekly water changes in the start until it has cycled.  It will take anywhere from 14-20 days for the tank to cycle.
As long as it says on the bottle it will take care of both chlorine and chloramine.. the later is an additive that everyone around includes in their water to disinfect and unlike Chlorine it takes a lot longer to evaporate.  Chlorine is for the most part used in this area these days as chlorine just evapotates to quick.

                          Re: pouring water to fast?

You say you added cycle starter?

That's why your numbers got high. Honestly I wouldn't have added the fish, only thing to do now is let them fall to death's hands but at the same time cycle your tank....if they die leave them in there.

If not do daily water changes of 10% or more to try and keep them alive. Use seachem prime or kordon's amquel+plus for dechlorinator. keep temps stable and add conditioners before adding the water in.

Have your output on the filter breaking water surface so that it can help aid gas exhcange which will also help keep the fish alive right now since the nitrogen cycle is probably frying their gills and shutting them down internally.

find someone nearby that would be willing to give you some used filter media to help move your cycle along even better then the bottled stuff that may or may not work well

                              Re: pouring water to fast?

I just have some quick advice...and that's not to take everyone's advice! You will truly drive yourself mad if you try to do everything that's suggested. I'd say to get a book or two, and sit down and read them. Spend some time and get familiar with ALL the different approaches out there, and choose the one that suits you. For example, there are some people that over-filter their over-filtered tanks, and some people (like me) who would have a panic attack if a large canister filter was on anything less than a 40g.    Some who enjoy live plants with just a single fluorescent tube, and some (ahem) who blast a 5g tank with a 70W metal halide.

This is a great hobby...enjoy it!

If you don't have any books yet on aquariums, I recommend this one:

It was one of the first I read, and I think it's a great, easy to read book.  :)

                                70w metal halide on a 5g? That's insane!
