    Re: School tanks

    Howdy,

For the school tanks if you would like some more live plants and platies, mollies or swordtails and can attend the HAS meeting this Sunday or the HLA meeting next Saturday Mark and I will donate some.

I talked with a Biology Teacher in the Dickinson High School (Marks school) yesterday and it sounds like he has a 75 gallon tank that needs to be cleaned and checked out.  If all goes well we hope to have it set up over the next month and we have offered to donate fish, plants, rocks, drift wood etc.  We don't know yet what equipment it has but maybe looking for donations from HFB folks.  I will keep you posted.
    later, ken/mark

          Re: School tanks

          a) The set up is relatively temporary.  This is in my spare bedroom.  I wanted to be able to deal with a mess if I had one without it being in a main room lol.  The tray under the magnum is temp as well.  I had to made sure I didn't have any more water issues lol.  I've actually thought of a skirt type of thing to hide the bricks or painting them until I get something else worked out.
          b) It's better than just putting it on the floor.  This way I have some height and could make sure it wasn't leaking out the bottom.
          c) I'm trying :-)

Not that it's unsightly but it looks really unstable/unsafe.

Thy look great, but I think they would look even better with dark background. But it's my personal prefs.

                oh...trust me...the bricks aren't moving anywhere...
I had the tank only up on one...but thought I could try the two.  I even ran into the tank...half full, with a bucket of water that threw me off balance and it didn't budge.   I triple checked each brick.  I can't even shake the tank.   I haven't put a background on it yet.  I just set it up last night.  I plan on getting butcher paper tomorrow.  I'm picking up a bulb for the light from home depot today.   Backgrounds for the tanks at school aren't there so the kids can climb around and see the tanks from all angles.  They like looking for the plecos lol.  Thank goodness the chocolates don't hide much.  The other pleco in the large tank I think only emerges with we aren't there and the building is dark lol.

                  Re: School tanks

Reba, I believe what Ek is trying to say is that the center of the tank is not supported. With the weight of the TANK, WATER, and GRAVEL the tank could bow causing a stress fracture. NOT GOOD ! I know its alot of work for you, but empty that tank and put two more bricks in, one in the front center and one in the rear center, and that will solve your problem. You can use your bricks, and the tank wont leak. I'll help you on Sunday if you wish, but at least empty the tank first cause that really does look like its not getting enough support. Regards

                    Re: School tanks

You could build a short stand out of plywood from Home Depot for about $50 bucks tops with stain.  They will even cut the wood for you, all you have to do is assemble it.  They also have sections of a sheet that are cut to 2'x4' that would atleast give you a decent base for your set-up.  Cinder blocks are also an option....buy three of them, a piece of wood for the top and there ya go.

                    Just my two pennies worth.

                            Re: School tanks

Most HOME DEPOTs will cut lumber to size for you. I would ask for two pieces of 4X4 cut to about 1 inch longer than the tank, and then two pieces for the sides, and then, invest in 8 CinderBlocks for about 12.00, and with the wood cost around 12.00, you would have a fairly decent and secure stand for about 25.00. If funds are low, lose the lumber and go with the cinderblocks.

I totally agree with ek.  I've been down that road many, many years ago and it was very leaky at the end. You will need support under the center, just don't want you to come home to a water soaked carpet.
