That will depend on what percentage of RO you'll be using for your tank. You don't want to use straight RO water on any fish. For attempted duplication of wild conditions, something in the range of 75 ppm TDS is a good target. RO units will remove almost all total dissolved solids from the water. Your plants need some of those minerals which will be removed, so you'll want to put those minerals back in the water to maintain healthy plants. Calcium, magnesium and trace elements are available for aquarium dosing. I like the PMDD pre-mix, which contains macros and traces.

RO is not a complete necessity for discus. I have wild blue and wild Tefe Green discus in tapwater that can reach a TDS of 700 ppm. Dan keeps his discus at HAW in tapwater. Opinions vary on breeding capability in hard water. I'd suggest learning how to keep them healthy and happy first. As with most cichlids, they'll attempt to breed when they feel comfy in their home. You can stress over monkeying with water chemistry then. Just my opinion.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Can you use any potting soil that you can pick up at Home depot or is there a special kind that is better?

Spagnum Peat from Canada is your best. Make sure it is 100% peat and has no additives.

Where can you get Spagnum peat? Do you just mix it in with the soil?

                        Re: Discus Thread

I have a 2.2 cu ft bag I bought from Loew's. You can have as much as you need.  I make a netting bag ( a nylon stocking works well) and fill it with peat and add it to my filter.

                            Re: Discus Thread

I would avoid potting soil or peat unless you top it off with gravel. Discus are pretty strong swimmers, they can kick up a cloud of muck quite easily.
Even if you manage to keep everything down with a layer of gravel, everything might get stirred up when using a gravel vac.

As for substrates, i cast my vote for flourite. (with strategically placed fert tabs if planted). They now have a jet black florite which is uber cool!
