6 Gallon Planted Fluval Edge Shrimp Tank - Build Thread

Maybe I missed this information, but is that Aquasoil (ADA) ? If so, you should be doing at least 50% water changes DAILY for the first week, the every 2 days the 2nd week, and so on until you get to a normal weekly routine. This is due to the initial heavy release of ammonia in the first couple weeks of use. That might explain some of the plants getting worse. The other things to consider is that all plants will suffer a bit when placed in a new environment...especially if they were emersed-grown.

Yes, I am using RO water and did not add anything to buffer the water. I added a little baking soday yesterday and got the pH up to 6. I will add a little more and at least get up 6.5.

Wow, how did your water chemistry get so messed up? I'd have to look back, but did you say you're using RO water? If so, that may be the problem. I'm sorry about the plants, but don't let it phase you. It takes a little practice to get a planted tank going, but once you do, it'll all be worth it.

Haven't forgotten about the ferts. I'm not feeling well which is why I haven't done it yet. I'll take a look at it as soon as I turn human again.

No problem, get well soon! I don't really think the fertilizer is going to be needed. I think I killed most of the plants with bad water chemistry. I tested the water yesterday and found that the KH is 2, GH is 4 and the pH is 5.6. I need to come up with a good plan on how to raise the values.
In other news I did add another light to the tank. I added a 10 watt CF lamp. I will post some pictures later today.

Thanks! Is it light enough you might be able to slide it forward to gain access?

When you have time, would you measure the height from the very base of the Edge to the very top of the filter/light enclosure?

It is 14.5" tall but you need about 17" or so to be able to remove the top lid.

No, I broke that tank down several years ago.

At one point I saw a post in a thread where someone added MR11 or MR16 lED "pods" on top of their edge to get better light coverage. Do any of you know where this is posted?

Once I get my tank put back together and rest up a bit, I can help you with the ferts. It's pretty easy once you figure out how much for your tank.

I got the cord/CO2 line covered and installed a timer on my CO2 tank. I am still trying to figure out how much and how often I need to fertilize.
