I just spotted this thing in my substrate and I have no clue what it is. Is it some kind of parasite/worm?

Try posting that on The Planted Tank forum. They're good at IDing anything planted tank related.

Try sloping the substrate so that it is thicker in the back. Also, partially bury the bottom of rock. That way it looks like it has been there.

Still a little dirty from agitating the sub. I think is better.

                • Been awhile since I posted here tank has been doing good but in the past week I have lost 3-4 shrimp and 2 otos. It seems like if I don't feed the shrimp daily I get dead ones. I dropped a small algae wafer in 3 days ago and all the shrimp and the otos immediately went all out eating it. The nitrates have been high for a but so I added some duckweed today to try and combat that some. Since I put it in half of the shrimp and all of my micro fish have been right under it. I just did a water test and got 6.4 ph 0 amm 0 nitrite 80 nitrate 2 degrees gh and kh. Any ideas on why I'm getting deaths?

Found out from jozle that I've been doing too large of water changes (50-70% a week) and I believe I've been cleaning the filter too much (every 4-6 weeks just rinsing the media in old water).

                  • 50-70% won't kill cherries. They act like little girls afterwards but if you've been doing that for a while they should be accustomed to it. My sakuras seem to love the large water changes for some reason. I do 80-100% every week or two.

My best guess would be your high nitrate levels. It can't be the food because they should be able to survive 3 days without food. I don't feed my blue velvets anymore, but there's tons of microorganisms and biofilm for them to feed on.

                    • The way I see it is that a large water change will change the chemical balance quite a bit. My shrimps don't do too well with a 30% or more water change. Also, try mixing your shrimp diet a bit, it might help. I have 5 different types of food and I feed them something different every 3-5 days.

                      • A lot of people underestimate how hardy neos are. With caridinas, I wouldn't do anything bigger than 25%, but with neos, they can handle much more. There's no real need for a varied diet as they do fine feeding on biofilm, microorganisms, and detritus. It's just more money you have to cough up. If anything, it's more for your well being than theirs.

                        • Oh yeah, I was more focused on my Cardinia. For neos, I don't even take care of mine. That's how much I really care for neocardinia. You've seen my sakura tank, its a brown forest.

                          • Lost 7 of the shrimp over night. One even ended up out side the tank. The only thing that has changed recently is 10 shrimp were brought in on Monday and I added the duck weed yesterday. I have no clue why the tank is crashing. Anybody have an idea?

                              • 78-80 temp and some of the dead shrimp are bigger than the micro fish.
