Water from an existing tank has little to no value, its just dirty water.

Beneficial bacterial films onto things, decor, substrate, media, etc.

i used water from my old tank simply because i knew it had the right parameters and was toxin free. i have read that inverts are typically very sensistive to chlorine and ammonia. any new tap water should be allowed to offgas chlorine before putting it into the tank. you can use an airstone to speed this up, a heater in there will help also since warm water has less capacity to contain dissolved gases. biomedia from an existing tank in the new filter will help the cycling process, as will running a new filter in an established tank for a while before setting the new one up. a test kit would be a good priority right now so that you can see whaen the nitrate spikes, this will mean the ammonia should be coming under control. an airstone in the shrimp tank might be a good idea right now too.

Tim tells me that berried females are the most likely to not survive the stress of a move, the only shrimp i lost out of the 40 that i received was a large berried female. i had shrimplets that were only an 1/8" in size that survived with no problems. on that note, man do they grow fast!

Yesterday at bed time (for me its at 10:30) i saw all of the remaining 5 having a meeting.

today in the morning at 7:00 am i counted all 5 again and they are moving more in the tank, but 1 of the berried females was hiding on the driftwood up side down. the one that did died was the biggest of all 6 and was berried. when i took it out i counted about 15-20 eggs. what a shame, but the remaining 5 seem just ok moving and eating the flake i give them.

i will get the kit soon. pay day is not near. also what can i feed them. i need to get more food for the other tank so i was looking to see what i can feed them instead of flake.

i have been feeding mine Hikari bottom feeder discs since they are small and have protein and algae but they seem to break down in water too fast. I have heard that NLS H2O stable wafers are good so i will try those next. i forgot that these things are omnivores until i saw them jump all over the beef heart that i put in there for the assassin snails (which totally ignored it). they do seem to like the small betta flakes that i feed the microrasboras too. they sit upside down in the foxtail plants and pull the flakes off of the surface as they move by lol. greedy lil grubbers.

Both pellets and flakes. They make a lot of different foods. You should be able to find something your fish and shrimp like. I recently saw they have a formula specifically for inverts. Gonna have to check that out

I've been trying to find that formula locally but nothing and most online vendors I buy from don't carry it either. I went ahead and just got the azoo max and the hikari shrimp cuisine. Also feed NLS H20 wafer, omega shrimp pellets, hikari excel sinking and NLS cichlid formula.
