Talk to Dan at HAW about the filter....he has good prices on Eheim! With this size tank....~58g? I would probably go with an eheim 2217 if it's planted or maybe two of them or two 2215's.

As for the plants, if you are not wanting to do co2 because of the cost then I will tell you that it pays off in the end! There is no real substitute to pressurized co2. The amazon would do find but probably not great and honestly the anubias would also benefit a great deal from co2. Just wondering why are you not wanting to use co2?

There are options like liquid organic carbon which would work or you could just stuff the tank full of fish.

I second this.  CO2 and eheim 2217.
Dan can hook you up pretty good with ADA line now.  ADA 9L substrate is $25!  
Since you went the ADA tank route, I wouldn't want a HOB filter.  To me it just defeat the purpose of a trimless tank.

I wouldn't put any kind of HOB on it either.....if you are you should have saved your money and got an AGA tank instead.

Your other options are to go with a wet dry but of course that would look gaudy too.
What are you going to have in the tank ?
If you have anything that puts out any kind of fish bio load then you are going to want to add something better than two 55g HOB's (if you want go HOB get two that each handle 110g like the aquaclear 110

If you want some CHEAP but good internal filtration there is a new Polish company that sells some AWESOME internal filters that several European Fish Clubs are rating very highly.  The main thing about them are they have a UV sterilizer built in.  These are based sponge filtration.

I am guessing the ADA tank is gonna be planted since for anything else it would really be overkill....

Wet/dry....oxygenates the water....not good for planted tank since we want a good amount of co2 in the water column and not injecting co2 is not gonna be good.

HOB....again it breaks too much water surface IMO not good for planted tanks again due to the gas exchange happening and again if you are not adding co2 to the tank then gassing almost nothing off is not good.

Internal filters....distracts from the rimless tank as well as any aquascape in the tank.


IMO the only option for a rimless tank is to go with a canister that is out of sight and to further do it I would get the glass lily pipes.

yes i think canister filter is the best option, so you guys don't think one 2128 will do? i like the fact that it does the heating too (or at least that is what they claim),

who is Dan and what does HAW stand for (houston aquatics! in heights)? sorry, i just don't know, what is Dan's contact info - phone number?

yes i plan to make it a planted tank, livestock will be fish from my existing 30g planted (4 almost adult angels, 4 checkerboard cichlids, 2 hillstream loach, ottos, lots of tetras, 4 danios, etc.)

i am open to doing flourish excel type of carbon dosing but just don't want to have to deal with CO2 set ups

so does this make sense guys or am i off base?

I have read a few heater problems in those Eheim....it's your choice though.

Dan is the owner or Houston Aquatic Warehouse....check the retailer feedback section.

as for the co2, the excel will work but what becomes of the tank with pressurized co2 is well worth the little bit of work to set them up.

have not thought about lights and substrate yet?  any suggestions for lights?  i want a light colored substrate, but none of the ada aquasoils, maybe i will just get regular small grain light colored gravel or of course i can do eco-complete (i live EC), but in that case it will be black instead of light colored, decisions - decisions

but doesn't it get really cloudy and mess with ph?  which ada one is the easiest to deal with?  i just don't want to get stuck in a way where i am in the hands of ada for everything - hehe

i went and picked up the tank a little while back, i feel like a little kid - can't wait to set it up, now i need to get a freaking stand soon so i can start the process :)

i am not a good journal person, but i will try, i am afraid i will be a disappointment because other journals are awesome and i am a novice at best

wait, when you say T5, please elaborate (brand, type, where to buy), i don't want to blast the thing with light, one thing i definitely want to avoid is algae, i just hope i can control that from the beginning, when i changed my lighting level from 1/wpg to 4/wpg, my current planted tank was overran by spot algae and i have not been able to eliminate them yet
