  • my 180 planted discus tank

Got to setup my 180 last night. Had fish in it with in an hour. All fish are happy as can be. Still dealing with cloudy water.
Will be adding more plants in time.
To night I get to add the CO2 to it.
For now the filter is a wet/dry. Will be adding a canister later on to.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Not really I just thought that discus needed soft water and such....everyone seems to make it that discus are super sensitive and need daily water changes with RO water in order to keep them alive.

Thats because they buy discus that are use to soft RO water.
My discus are raised in Houston tap water.

I do nothing special to the water for my discus tank.

However to breed I do use RO water. After the babies are born they go into tap water slowly.

Discus like low bio loads that is why they need more water changes.

Re: my 180 planted discus tank

I think the topic of how much Holey rock actually affects the hardness and pH was covered in depth earlier by Souljaa and others. The resultant was as follows: Greater surface area + Greater water movement = Greater change in water chemistry. Large rocks won't affect chemistry as much as ... say ... sand.

Nice tank by the way, Walter. I'll love to see it once the plants grow in. Does Alternanthera Reineckii sound familiar for pic5?

Have you kept clown loaches with discus before?

I had to move mine out, they "felt up" the discus sometimes which really freaked out the discus. Just sort of touching them with their whiskers, but the discus thought this was something one does beofre you take a bite. Hated to put the big clowns into a smaller tank, but I had no choice. Finally sold the clowns, which was a shame.

I am sorry you had such bad luck with the clowns. I have not only clowns but I have 9" plecos in the tank.
I have had them with discus for over a year & never had a problem with either of them.
