'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Re: Safari
Ken and Raul and their families and Bob and I had a lot of fun. Ken and sons caught a lot of guppies and green sailfin mollies Raul and his family did not catch as many but Raul's wife caught a really neat speckled fish. It might me a molly. I tried to buy it but she would not sell. Ken and sons shared their catch so I did not go home empty handed. Maybe I can talk her out of some babies later. No plecostomus humongus were to be found.

Re: Safari
It was great. Thank you KC for giving me instructions on throwing a Cast Net. Everyone was great, kids loved it.
Sorry Max, if we get any fry from that speckled fish, you get your pick. You know that that fish has a nice yellow tint along the bottom of its body and tail...it is a pretty fish.
Oh yea, after eveyone left I caught a nice size fish. It looks nice to me, but I do not know what kind. It is about 6 inches head to tail and the fins and tail are reddish tinged.
I will post pics soon.Raul

Re: Safari
If you all want to join the Houston Livebearers Association in the forum at the bottom of the page thats cool. I wonder how many times the HLA would let you all vote lol.
Tell your wife I am going to hold her to this contract for a pair of fry from the speckled fish.

Re: Safari
Damn, now I wish I hadn't missed this. Sounds like ya'll had a blast. Unfortunately, I had bought the lumber to make the new rack for the 45's and really needed to get it up and running.Consider my posts as general information based on personal experiences, and in most cases, far oversimplified. Actual mileage may vary. Don't try this at home. If symptoms persist, contact your physician.

Re: Safari
Sounds like y'all had a fabulous time. Ken and his sons were good enough to break off some mollies and guppies with me as well in exchange for some endler's. I'm stoked. There's just something cool about keeping local fish. It's got a sort of purity to it.
So far they are doing famously.

Re: Safari
I have a question for Ken/Mark or anyone for that matter. The fish we caught on the Safari.....what kind of food are you feeding them? I have flakes, pellets, peddles and brine.....I'm concerned that they are not eating that well at least initially. Most of the food is gone by morning, but I don't put very much at night because they don't seem to like it.
Thanks

Re: Safari
We put the mollies in 50 gallon barrel where we had nice green water, and added some aquatic plants. They are doing great and don't think we lost any. There should be enough natural food in there for a while but we do put a few floating pellets in there each day and have started seeing the mollies venture to the top. The deep green water is probably good for them because that is simular to what we caught the fish in.
The guppies we saved less of and put in a bathtub outside (goats water trough) we did loose a few of them, maybe because this water is clear and bright sun hits them? We aslo added lots of aquatic plants and drop in few floating pellets each day. If I was to do it again I would have put them in another barrel of green water. Next time we will have more barrels ready to put them in when return home.
In a couple weeks we may see how the mollies do inside; then we can enjoy seeing the flashy males. Chris let us know how yours are doing inside from the beginning!

Re: Safari
I had a little battery operated pump I used going home. I left the guppies and mollies together in the fifteen gallon tote that I took them home in. I added more water slowly and put the tote in the shade with a box filter. I seeded the tote with green water. They eat three times a day: earthworm flake, Aqua Max 100, and spirulina flakes. I have not lost any. I have too many fish per gallon so I plan to seperate them soon.
I try not to feed more than they eat in five minutes. The trip tends to upset their stomachs so maybe feeding light at the beginning makes sense.

Re: Safari
Mine are starting to eat better now. I had "2" 20G tanks setup with water from my bigger tanks (70% full) w/box filters and heaters (Set low at first). I split the fish larger ones in one tank and smaller in another. Then I added some of the bayou water we brought home and added some more aquarium salt, about 2 teaspoons each tank.
I haven't added any substrate or anything yet, currently treating them for parasites.
I lost some of the real small ones the first evening and decided to add an aerator to the tank ( this one had a smaller box filter than the other which is for up to 60G). Since then, they have been fine.
I got a couple of little guys that look like puffers to me.

Re: Safari
rrocket2002, I'm glad you brought that up. I've got some of Ken/Mark's catch as well in a small QT tank and I haven't really seen them eat. Initially I put in some small pellets and a couple bloodworms...they didn't touch it. One problem was I had these marbles in the bottom of the tank as substrate from when I had a betta in it (it seemed like a good idea at the time). well the food was falling in betwen the marbles where they couldnn't get at it. So tuesday I went to go scoop all those marbles out and I found out the hard way that I'd lost two of the guppies as well.
so I got rid of the substrate altogether and put a small piece of an algae wafer (my other livebearers love these more than the plecos do). I didn't see the fish eat any but it was gone the next day. I put another piece in today and a couple of the guppies nibbled at it. Hopefully they'll start eating it. I figure I'll ween them onto regular flake/pellet food once they get in their permanent home.
The guppies were a little sluggish but improved when I pulled the marbles and dead fish out (go figure) They seem to be doing fine and the mollies are as active as ever.
I'm also doing small water changes every day since it's an uncycled tank, about 15 - 20% or so. I don't want to stress them too much with water changes but I also don't want to stress them with ammonia poisoning so I guess it's a bit of a balance.
They all seem to be doing fine at this point.

Re: Safari
Just a quick bump to let everyone know the safari fish are doing fine (knock on wood). I figure another week and i'll start putting them in "general population" so to speak. I'm hoping maybe they can help with some hair algae I'm getting in my 30 gallon.
Everyone else doing ok with with y'all's safari fish?
