      Re: Safari

I'd love to go, but unfortunately I won't be in the houston area at all that weekend :(

got to go visit the mum for her birthday

maybe on the next one, I've actually heard about that place before, the idea of organizing a safari for it never came to mind though.

and if there's any salty's reading this I've been told that in Galveston off the seawall if your to sift through the seaweeds you can sometimes find a fish that looks like a lionfish, not sure what it is though

There is no telling. I just got my fishing license. The lady who sells them keeps plecostomus and chinese algae eaters. She said they might stop by after church to watch.

            Re: Safari

I"m planning to show up w/family.

I was talking to a local fish store owner and he made some recommendations.  Common sense stuff really.

If you catch Plecos or anything really, to keep them isolated from the rest of your stock for at least a week or two.

            (1) Plecos will need time to clear out their system of mud and other waste that will dirty up the water.  Doing a water changes 20/30% everyday or every other day, plus treat daily for parasites that they will undoubtably have.

            (2) Let's see, is there a 2nd point, hmmm..., I forgot what I was gonna say, except the parasite treatment needs to be done with all the fish for at least week on a daily basis.

The fish store owner was telling me that a guy caught a Pleco from a lake or bayou that he brought in a double wide ice chest 4ft long and the fish was longer than that because it was partially curled up in it.  The owner told him what the heck do you think I'm gonna do with that...lol.

            I'm looking forward to Sunday.

              Re: Safari

I guess baked with a little lemon juice and maybe some almonds would be good. hmm Would it be legal to eat if it was caught with a cast net? It sure would not fit in a minnow trap. It would be illegal to release it. They don't want you to waste it. lol I am looking forward to it.

                Re: Safari

For those of you bringing minnow traps, in search of smaller fish, now it the time to make your bait.

Old recipe recomended to me for carp follows

leave a cup of cornflakes in the bottom of your cerial bowl
soak with milk untill completely soggy
take a spoonful in your hand and squeeze all the milk out,
then roll it into a round balls
leave on the window sill for two days or untill dry.

                Anyone bringing a rod & reel ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                  Re: Safari

I was really hoping for a place where I could put in the boat, but I just don't think that's going to happen.

Eat a Pleco......maybe if I starving with nothing else to eat, but then maybe not....LOL.

Fish store owner was telling me about a stocked man-made lake near a apt complex off I-45 South and Fuqua that anyone may fish from.  One of his customers said he had seen cichlids in the lake, but did not specify what kind.  What do yall think?  Worth a scouting party?

                      Re: Safari

Do you suppose cat food scented with menhadden oil would be any good?

The plecos are non game fish so thats ok. I guess the next step is to look at fish consumption bans and advisories. That seems to be OK for our location. I hope I don't catch a four foot pleco anyway. I think I will leave the rod and reel at home.

We have permission to park on the far end of the Discount Tire Store parking lot only away from the store next to the highway. They have been good to us so let us be good to them. Don't forget your fishing license, gear, and bring a lunch. Cameras might be a good idea. I would not be surprised to see 5-20 people there.
