      Re: white clouded water

Activated carbon's actually one of the most porous substances you can find to put in your filter, so even though the chemical properties are "used up" in a very short time, bacteria can colonize in the teeny tiny holes for as long as they like. So, even though it won't have chemical properties (some say within a matter of days) anymore, it will host tons of beneficial bacteria. That's why I suggested that he doesn't necessarily need to remove the carbon.

        From what I understand.....

Carbon will soak up impurities.....like a sponge in a way....after it becomes saturated it's a matter of time before it can't hold any longer.

          Re: white clouded water

i dipped it last night with a quick strip.  this morning i retested everything with my chemical test kit.  ur right nitrates were like just a little over 0 but not more than 10 at most.
carbon is new.  just changed it a couple days ago.
          ill get a picture ASAP
oh and i tried the cloudy water stuff once but not much difference.  ill try it again though.  worth a try

If you have tried it all.. then go get some Sechem Purigen or some Kent Marine Organic Adsorption Resin.. both works WONDERS.

                      Re: white clouded water

I may be completely off, because I'm just throwing out another possibility....but could that be algae blooms?  I know that generally causes the water to go green-ish, but I noticed the tops of the rocks are bright with algae, plus the Aquaglow light is supposed to be pretty good for plants (if I'm not mistaken).  Maybe it's the lighting?  But that doesn't really explain why adding the other filter fixed the problem for a couple of months.

                      Input, anyone?

Personally I do not trust those "water clear" chemicals....

Imagirlgeek, I am with you on this....that's a lot of algae growing on the rocks.

                            Use the process of elimation.
You say you had this problem sence you had it up & running except for when you added a new filter & it only cleared up for a month.
The fiters are the 1st thing to check in my eyes. Removed both filters running now replaced with different filter. If it does not fix problem try different lights.
I know you have another 29 tank. So you can use the parts from this tank.

my wife and i were talkin wallago about this as well.  imagirlgeek sparked my brain curnin.  the light bulb was put in sometime around the problem.  maybe the light is causein the algae bloom???  i have actually tried other filters before.  i had a penguin biowheel on it for awhile,  the water was white and never got better so i though maybe it wasnt good enough.  plus the biowheel sucked cuase it got stuck all the time.  i though maybe everytime the biowheel got stuck, it killed the bacteria and started the cycle all over again.  so i got new filter and same problem.  im gonna get a different bulb., and the stuff zulaab sugested and see what happens.
