thats why my tanks are all either bare glass bottoms or heavily planted. i'm not sure, but the plants seem to keep gases from accumulating. i hope so, since i've always heard not to vac a planted tank b/c of the root systems... and i don't... now i have doubts.

I've heard that too. The bit about plants taking in the gasses and not to vac a planted

All the substrate & water was removed leaving a completely empty tank & all the tanks got 100% new water after the substrate was removed (minus what was in the HOB & canister, didn't touch those), so it couldn't have been gasses. Of course, we removed the fish first, lol. I test parameters weekly and all have been consistant.

Throughout the day I tested the ammonia level and it steadily dropped after adding some water conditioner & AmQuel. Late this afternoon, it dropped to 0. After adding a test fish at that point & waiting a few hours, the rest of the clan is back in the Hell's Angel tank.

All of your input is greatly appreciated! I learn so much from yall. I think Sunny probably hit the nail on the head this time... I wasn't home when hubby emptied the tank and no one conditioned the new water! DOH!

They could possibly have been trapped in your filters

No conditioner. That would do it.
Now you need to post new pictures...

I don't like the layout, but it's hubby's tank so I let him do his thang. The rainbow shark loves the PVC maze he made for it & likes to swim through the holes on the flower pot, too. Pretty cute to watch it playing.
