Your pump is too powerfull for the overflowbox. Maybe divert a little water back in the sump so no mulm build up.

        Overflow Box Air Bubbles

Mulm? My only concern is the possible air pocket in the u tube, but I've been simulating shutdowns and restarts I've the last hour with out noticing any issues. The noise is the only thing that needs to go.

Mulm is the greenish brown stuff that builds up in a sump. Those air bubbles will be a problem. The flow will slow and could over flow your tank.

A diverter is a T that comes off the output of the pump. Put a valve on it so you can control the water that is bypassed(not run up thru the return line). You get flow in your sump and control the flow of the return. Fine tune the system. Cesar built one and did a DIY on here but I can't find the thread.

You don't need to make a new one. Just buy a coupling and add a PVC to extend it but have you tried to raise the box a little? Seems like too much water is coming in so it causes the bubble. Mine use to do that.

+1 on the standpipe. It'll reduce noise as well. Just don't make it too tall!
