Can anyone tell me if this amount of air bubbles is normal, or if its something I should be concerned with.

OK, the reason for that is that the standpipe in the outside box is too short so it's draining very quickly. Should you be concerned about it malfunctioning? Not really.

So simple fix is to heighten the standpipe? Did you have these issues?

Yes, that's the fix. I made that standpipe for my setup, raise it some to suit your taste
