Can you use a marine test kit to test for nitrate in freshwater?

Nope. If the test kits were interchangeable, they'd only need to make one.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

So no marketing gimmicks? That's a little hard to believe

OK. Believe what you want. Use a SW kit. Let me know how that works out for ya.

So what makes marine nitrates/ nitrites different to those found in freshwater?

Oddly enough, I'm in the middle of a mad scientist experiment. I've been using a SW test kit and today the 280 tested zero for nitrates where the same test kit had read nitrates before. Tank is going on about 12 days without a WC.

Uh, the fact that's it's in a SW solution in stead of a FW solution? Who knows, maybe it is a gimmick and API has been double-dealing the whole time. NO2 is NO2 but the solutions in which they're dissolved are radically different.

I have both test kits. The bottles look exactly the same. Only difference is the test card.

I can test with both kits and report back.

I expect that there will be no difference in results.

Sunny, retest the nitrate levels. I fine this is the hardest one to test for.

I use the 5 in one test strips(yes I know they are not good but they work for what I need) and the bottle says they can be used in FW or SW. Gives 2 different color charts for the different items.

From all I ve read on it the api test kits are the exact same its only the results card that's different the only difference is when they sell master kits they only include the card for which its labled for. If you buy the individual test it comes with both cards

Ok that makes more sense guys. That Petro tank is not supposed to register zero nitrates on any scale except for something I'm testing long term. Will post up when i figure this out. Picking up some test strips from Petco right now to double check.

Thai, please post the results of your experiment. I'd be interested in finding out the answer.

My API test kit is the same reagent for both FW and SW, only difference is the color card.
