The bio media Eheim offers is very expensive $100 for 5L......
i use lava rock (you can get that at just about any fish store or rock yard for cheap) and a butt load of the little "media tunnels". or i've heard of people using the gravel that you put in a tank as media also. never tried that but it sounds ok....
4l ehfimech
1 1.5 foam pad
5 l substrate pro or 3 bags of bio-bale
1 layers of polish filter pad
the regular eheim substrat works, too, and it's on sale at DrsFosterandSmith.com.... just need to make sure you rinse it out on a regular basis. the pro substrat is a round ball designed to prevent plugged filter beds.
you can do 2 w/d but they have to be bulk headed together, But 1 is all you need. Stuff the cans with pot scrubbers,DIY filter floss pads & retickulated foam pads.
