210g: Need Ideas!!!

    210g: Need Ideas!!!

    I just recently got a Oceanic 7ft 210g and I want to change the look. I've already started painting the stand. And had a few questions before I continue.

    Would I weaken the tank's structure by removing the top trim off the tank? I know people do it for 100-125g tanks but I'm not sure about a 210g. It has just a center brace. Also worried because the glass panels are so thick it's really heavy.


    Also, I am wanting to paint on a background instead of buying the paper and taping it on. I did a search and people are saying use Krylon spray paint brand? Is there a certain one? Or just regular Black Krylon?

    SWEET! Hope you got a great deal. What are your plans for stocking it?

    As for the top trim, I wouldn't expect it to be a problem removing it because it's so thin and weak, but I've heard that it does give added support. So, I'll let someone else chime in here...

      Some variant of Tropheus, I kind of have my mind set on Muragos because I got a good deal on a 30 F1 colony...But still undecided.

      But I know for sure I'm going to get me some Famulas! Not sure which ones...

      I guess I kind of did get a good deal, the tank and stand is near perfect condition. And it has Oceanic badging :)

        Muragos are an excellent choice! Someday I'd like a colony. Famula are a great petro to keep. They resemble troph behavior more than other petros and don't get quite as big or aggressive. Check out the thread of my famula chimba when you get a chance. Lots of vids :)

          you can use acylic paint if you want to just paint, might be cheaper.

            i've done most of my tanks with the cheap home depot spray paint. its like 98cents a can. doesnt look bad at all but im going to try exterior latex paint next time. i figured it would be easier than spraying the paint

              Top trim is not holding the tank together in any way....its just protecting the top edge of glass from accidental hits on the edge and provides a base for using a top piece if you want to use them. I will say that I had an Oceanic 210 that was about 15 yrs old, and when I removed the top trim I noticed they didnt make very good cuts...I guess they thought they could hide the poor workmanship under the top trim. Hopefully yours will look better.

              As far as painting, I have used Krylon and Rustoleum brand spray paints with good success...after Im done painting the color on I finish it with a couple of coats of spray on polyurethene to waterproof and further protect the paint.

                +1 for coating paint with a sealer. Latex paint will peel of easly if not sealed. Just look at the back grounds a City Pets. I have been experimenting using the underlayment pading for laminate floors and spray painting with krylon. The padding is called floor muffler and is a plastic foam. Krylon sticks good and I get it for free from my installers.Blue tape it on back of the tank. If anyone wants some pm me.

                  you think spray paint is better than latex? this floor muffler, you just paint it what ever color you want and tape it to the back? does it look smooth or can you still see the foam texture?

                    Just spray paint with krylon. It sticks good. You can not scrap it off with you finger nails. It's smooth and you see no texture. Cut it to size and tape it on.

                        krylon fusion is what i use for all my backgrounds and its sturdy as crap...takes lots of coats though

                          I think I used 4 cans of spray paint on my 210, but I painted the back and also painted half of each side. You could probably get away with 3 cans....but I would buy 4 just as a backup. You will only need one or two cans of poly spray.

                          Dont forget to check your end results by lighting only the inside of the tank...dont worry how it looks from the outside. It will look imperfect from the outside but it will look great when you light it up from the inside.

                            And dont try to touch up with color after you POLY coated.. It will make your paint peel
