no doubt, the 50 1.4 is a good lens.
If i were getting this just for fish, i would get the 50 1.8 for about 100, and spend the other 2bills on lighting.

Marshall, Jim is helping me locate a 50/1.4 for around 300 clams, to me that's reasonable for a good lens. I'm also picking up a 35/1.8 from Trung, but now I'm unsure if I really need it. BUT, the 35 does take some nice photos and I would like to have it on hand rather than not.
Flash prices are a bit hazy right now because I'm unaware what range they sell for, especially the ones that support wireless activation.

There is no "one lens" to rule them all. figure out what your budget is, and if ya want to shoot fishes get a lens and a flash, a flash is cheaper than you think.
As far as you asked, is a 50 the same as a 75 on your sensor, i say who cares, the point is you said your 35 was too wide on your sensor, so now you know you need to go higher.
how much do you want to spend?

@Sunny, I think what Soymilk is trying to say is that in terms of Sharpness.. :
Nikon 50 f/1.8G > Nikon 50 f/1.4G > Sigma 50 f/1.4 HSM

Good job with that lens. Tank looks dark, nothing you can do but add a wireless flash.

A few more from Jacob's tanks last night. Can see the noise for sure shooting at 1600 with no flash and aperture wide open:

Sound advice from you and Hangman about the lenses being long on a DX body with crop factor sensors. There were a few instances that I felt I needed a longer lens when I was shooting with the 35mm 1.8 and maybe having both on hand would be a good thing. Wouldn't the 50mm 1.4 be the equivalent of a 75mm when you consider crop factor?Originally posted by soymilk View PostNot trying to confuse you but there are MULTIPLE nikon 35mm and 50mm lenses. 50mm f1.4G is the lens jim has, and it has different characteristics than the 50mm f1.4D. The sharpest nikon 50mm is the new Nikon 50mm f1.8G, the best bokeh goes to the sigma 50mm f1.4. The nikon 50mm f1.4G falls between those two but cost the most.
Did you mean that the 50mm 1.4D falls between the Sigma 50mm 1.4 and the Nikon 50mm 1.4G?
35mm f1.4G -$$$$$
35mm f1.8G -$200
50mm f1.4G -$540
50mm f1.4D -$320
50mm f1.8G -$220
50mm f1.8D -$130
I would strongly suggest you try a 50mm first. I had a sorta love hate relationship with the good ol' 50mm. Like hangman said, its generally too long indoors. Its something you either get used to and love the lens, or you hate it and it goes straight to the bottom of your lens drawer.

Im my opinion, 50 is a little too long on the D200, and 35 is a little too short. They have 40 f/2.8 Micro lens that is pretty nice though.

Cool. Then I can get the 50/1.4 and just get a good zoom lens for mundane stuff

There is a lot of overlap. 35mm is wider but 50mm is faster at 1.4.
Except for that 1% of the time, they basically do the same.
I would get the 1.4f. But thats cause I shoot a lot in doors and i like bokeh.
I believe most people say bokeh on the 50 is better than the 35.

But the next part is possible and plausible.
So 30 and 50 is not a good idea?
