Re: High Protein Diet Experiemnt - Need Stray Trophs
Well it was a ceiling and not a roof..
So your going to compartmentalize a 125 gallon with each having its own filtration.
If we're doing a experiment, lets do it.
It can be a club event...
Lets see how many Trophs we can feed dogfood and hamburger meat to.
Raw Hamburger vs. Pondraised Algae...who will win...tune in next week for the body count..!!

Re: High Protein Diet Experiment - Need Stray Trophs
I think environment has a lot to do with this one.
If you can force the trophs to metabolize and burn food up faster then they can handle it.
Also have to be strong healthy fish too which I am sure most are not.
I have fed my fish some odd stuff and a few friends can attest to it but rather not say in case some others think they can do the same. I controlled the fish's environment to an extent before trying any of it.
Get all stressed fish and they will die. Keep them in pristine condition and gear them up to the feedings and you will be fine. Just have to know when to stop.
Re: High Protein Diet Experiment - Need Stray Trophs
I am thinking of getting a ghetto 55 gallon, perform daily 110% watechanges, and get a dozen Pondraised whatevers and feed only the chow.
I will perform 110% taking it down to 10% refill to 50% and takedown again to 10% then refill.
Then document initial size, and their size every 2 weeks and anything unusual.
The filtration on the tank will be 2-AC 110's that will be alternated and cleaned every 2-3 weeks.

Re: High Protein Diet Experiment - Need Stray Trophs
Put it next to a window if possible...
Add a powerhead in there on top of the two AC110's...
If at all possible get an autofeeder and feed tons of small portions throughout the day and you will be amazed by how much you can get away with...
If you plan on doing that large of a water change I suggest getting a carbon filter or use trash cans to age/warm the water...
If you are gonna push the limits of those fish you have to give them something to fight with and any of the above going wrong just slightly with a high protein diet is gonna cause the flora to flourish and cause problems.
I have my Ilangi's up to 10+ teaspoons of NLS/Dainichi daily which is spread amonst 3x Eheim air feeders and have gotten back to doing the larger water changes(Had to switch to 4x 70% weekly due to chloramine/ammonia). I keep lighting on for about 10hrs but 4x96w+3x55w PC lighting and usually once a week I get pretty wasted in front of the tank and feed a couple sheets of nori or few cubes of PE Mysis soaked in Garlic Extreme.
I have watched the fry that were spit recently almost double in size in the past couple of weeks and it's amazing! I know they have either caught up to or suprassed the size of some fry I sold right before the move and that was over a month ago. The fry previously sold are kept in a 75g fry only tank where food is a lot easier to get to then in a tank of adults.
I also went and picked up a juvi M'toto Yellow Petro that I want to see if it will increase in size when it has to fight for food.... also it was not acclimated over to pellets from flakes and so far has lost the sunken belly look normally found in flake fed grazers and has taken on a brighter yellow color.
I have also incorporated a new Trace/Mineral supplement that I think has taken quite a turn for the better and has brought some very noticeable results.
