          I would definitely do a 60" light on a 60" tank - instead of a 48"

Re: Lighting for 60" x 18" with Tropheus Annectens

I have spoken to that guy in this forum, his screename is samuel.

I got a brand New Eheim 2260 from Marine Depot which price matched BigAls for $249.00  I also purchased 3 gallons of Bio-Bale to go in the canister.

The canister will be packed with 4L of Effimech, 1 piece 30ppi Green Foam 1" Pad, 3 Gallons Bio-Bale, then Blue Bonded Pad and 3 Bags of Chempure for a 115 gallon tank.

I am not sure which bulbs come in a 60" Donald, but I am really looking for one.  I was looking at (2) 30" T5 fixtures, but they have the exact same bulbs as the 24" fictures, they just cost about $5-10 more for each one because of the added length of the plastic.

Anyone know where I can find a 60" T5, or HO T5 fixture?

I really do not want some monster fixture that is going to generate 1.2 gigawatts or something..

Maybe it would be easier to get a 72" tank

that way you can use 2x36" or just one 72"

Or go with a 115 tall that is 48" long.

All I have seen in 60" lighting are retro fit.

Re: Lighting for 60" x 18" with Tropheus Annectens

I think that the best fixture is going to be a 48" T5 HO

The extra power will be more than enough.  I even think a regular T5 lighting at 28W each bulb would probalby be enough.

Man, I got a brand new custom stand built, custom glass tops made with oceanic pull tabs, a brand new Eheim 2260 to go with this 60" x 18" x 24" 115 gallon Used Oceanic Aquarium

I done spent $500 for all that, so I am not about to give up on it now.  I just need to get either a 60" Flourescent Fixture, or 48" Twin Bulb, or 48" T5 or T5 HO

All the 30" fixtures have the same bulbs Kelvin and Wattage as the 24", the fixture is just 6" longer, yet you pay about $5-10 more for it.

The 60" retro kits are VHO lighting or you find somehting different. Even then, I'd have to build a canopy for the tank, so the retro fit lights could go in.

Yeah I figured that you will be sticking to this tank....I would probably go with the T5 HO.....do you have/let algae grow in your tanks Geoff?

Re: Lighting for 60" x 18" with Tropheus Annectens

Up to this point, all my tanks have come with the standard lighting you get which comes with the tank.

This tank was a used tank that had no lights, so I wanted to try to do something different.  I never messed with lights before, so I really wanted to toy around with this, experient and learn about lights.

I want the right Kelvin mix, that is going to make the Annectens look really good on a red flint substrate.  Basically a slightly more dark blast sand.  I want to try to get the males to look like the Konnings photos which shows them as a marron.  I see where there is something there in them, that could be brought out in the correct lighting.

As for the wattage, I am almost certain every tank has 40W 36" Aqua Glow or GE's 9325's.  The 180's are twin bulb fixtures, the 125 and 150 are single bulb fixtures.  My 180's have plecos in them to keep the algae down.  The 125 and 150 I scrub algae in, which I really dont mind it.

The biggest problem so far has been this freaking tank, being an oddball, and no one has 60" stuff because the tanks are made anymore unless totally custom jobs.

So, that leaves me with 48" or (2) 30", or finding a 60"

So far it seems that 48" T5's are my way to go.

I just do not want to wash out the annectens, they are black and white colored, except the males that are over 3" right now look grey/green like color with blue-purple dorsals.

The lights they are under right now is T12's 48" Actinic and 48" standard light of unknow Kelvin.  This fixture was given to me and I do not want use this on my tank.  Its a shop light.

When I went to look for a tank for my Ilangi's the lighting was somewhat a big issue for me cause one it needed to make them look good and two I wanted algae.

Geoff if you want to go with a DIY type thing I can assist you with Metal halide....probably come out to be the same as sourcing a fixture for that tank if not slightly more but it will probably be 2x150w. Then you can go with ADA's 8000k bulbs which is more of a white but doesn't wash out colors like the other options.

                          PM sent.

I would probably change the bulbs to lower wattage, and somehow disable the moonlight.

What is the reason that you would disable the moonlight?

Hey I think their are metal halide set up that are in the 64 inch or 60 inch.  My cousin got one that was use for my tank which is a 64 custom build tank.  The light go over it perfectly flushing both sides.  If your just keeping cichlids then I think the t5 are the best and affordable option.
