  • Picked up a small colony today

    Hello All,
I picked up a colony of 15 WC T. moorii Kalambo today from a fellow club member.

NO, they are not in the death tank, I still have toxic typhoid Mary hooked up to it.
I put them in the 75. The guy had 30 and over the last 7 months lost half to aggression. I vented them and it is definately a male heavy colony. He had them in a 125, and I think that was too big of a tank for them. They are fine in the 75. A male is already shakin' so keep your fingers crossed I get some bakin' too.

He also threw in a beat up subadult male Burundi Frontosa. I've never had fronts before....

Anyway, I've contacted Alison at Cichlids and Herps to start looking for some WC Chilambo and gave her a heads up that, once Uncle Sam greezes my palm, I'll be hitting her up for more Kigomas.

Geoff, those mpimbwe Red Cheeks you have are smokin'!!!! Will you have any available after Feb?

I should be getting the Namansi from John soon.

    Life is going on.

    Thanks for your support guys,
    Jenney.

        Geoff,
Are they a Tropheus sp. only or are they classified as mpimbwe as their species?
How do their needs, aggression, general behaviour differ from other species? Are they prolific breeders, mellow, high strung?

My little, male heavy colony of Kalambo are getting accustomed to the homemade food, their fins are healing. Even tho they're similar to moops, they're not nearly as cool as the moops. They are lively and give me give me experience with another variant and for that I am enjoying them immensely.

The red cheeks are still officially classified as a brichardi type. Konnings in his Tanganyikan's in their Natural Habitat book, classified them as sp.mpimbwe, but he has not taken the steps needed to have them officially classified that.

The red cheeks are a very agressive fish, and have lots of conspecific agression. As you might see in a number of my photos, the entire colony almost allways has some kind of damge either torn fin, white scales, or white lips from the fighting.

I have had them since summer of 2007 when I got a group of 18 from Peter Rubin (Atlantis Tropical Fish) and another 18 from Mike Bailey (Texas Tropheus Traders), and a small group of 6 also from Mike last summer. Over the last 2-3 years of having the colony I have lost about 12 of them to agression and dropsy issues (following IKE Hurricane).

The fish are very prolific breeders, and I have sold about 80-100 fish all spit, I dont strip, during this time.

I actually prefer the Kalambo over the Moops because of the cool looking red eyes, but that is just me. I like the weird ones.

In my opinion though, no other colony looks as nice Alpha to Omega as do Moops. They are in my opninon the best looking Trophs to have.

The Kalambo will look alot better in a few weeks, once my homemade food has had a chance to percolate thru their veins!!
I'll get some pics of them up. Today some time.

Here they are. Give them a couple weeks on the good food with regular, large water changes, and the right parameters and the blue in the fin you can just see a hint of on a few of them will POP!!
Notice the Chilambo fry on the left!!

I have a sneaking suspicion that out of 15 there is only one female. They are small, and I know things change, but all but one vented male. I saw this colony when they were at the seller's facility. The guy who bought them origianlly back in August had 30 to begin with. They haven't grown much at all in all those months!! They're not overly thin, do you guys think it was lack of water changes? They were in a 120+ breeder shaped tank.
Mama Chilambo runnin' the show. She chases all of them and breaks up fights and what may or may no be spawning.

                  Thanks for looking guys,
                  Jenney.

I feed a variation of Bill's (Billansor). I change it up from batch to batch. This time I used: 10 oz spinach, 10 oz peas, 6 oz green beans, small red, yellow, and orange pepper, peel from a yellow squash, 6 oz of raw broccoli and carrot slaw, 8 oz of red swiss chard, 7 tblspn spirulina powder, 1 # shrimp and 1.5# whiting. All raw.

Last batch, I used italian parsley, red cabbage and no green beans or peas. They rip it up!!!!!! And the color they develop after a couple weeks is very satisfying.

For about a month I fed it exclusively but MAN it's messy I had green water from the spirulina. So now I feed it in the morning and NLS for afternoon and evening feed.

LOL at the 35 gallon GF tank.

thanks jenney... the one i make is made with peas, shrimp, spirulina and gelatin and multivitamis. my fish love it.. i get soaked at feeding times. LOL about the green water... i had to cut back to once a day with it also. I think this food really helped to condition them for breeding. I will have to try adding some other ingredients. Thanks for the suggestions.

The girlfriend tank is kinda cool... Her birthday is today so i got her an tank a week ago and filled it with yellow labs and demasoni. I picked up a few clown loachs for her yesterday. She loves it. It makes it much easier for me if she is involved too.
