  • Water change routine - 55 gallon Tropheus fry grow out tank

On my 125's I will continue the once a week @ 75%, but on the 55 with the dubs growing out, I was wondering if perhaps they should go to 50% every 4 days instead of 75% once a week.
    Thanks for your answers,
    Jenney.

150% twice a week for me, with no problems. Running Johns carbon snake of course.

            That's what I was thinking.

The only snafu I can think of is the pH, etc jumping around more than the one time during the weekly water change. Georgia water is mighty close to RO water. It runs neutral to slightly acidic with 0-1 gH and 0 kH. I have crushed coral as part of substrate and add epsom salt, salt water tank salt and baking soda to get it the "h's" around 9 pH, 18gH and 10 kH.
If I do water changes more often the fish will be subjected to more temporary fluctuations (decrease then increase) in the chemistry.

I don't have room for a vat to pre condition and buffer my water.

My experience tells me that they will be ok. My WC's have adjusted nicely to the fluctuation- I drain the water, fill it and then dump everything in at the end once the filters are back on. And lately they've been spawning a couple hours after the water change.

I think I may just be over analyising, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

            Thanks,
            Jenney

I think the fishes will be fine. Tropheus are some hardy fishes. Geoff may have more input regarding water change and additives. My water out the tap is good so all I do is run it over a carbon bottle. Geoff adds banking soda to his water the last time I checked but naturally I defer to him regarding his own wc process.

When I put my fishes on the power feeding program I do as much as 70% every other day; however, that gets old really fast and for the most part I do 80% every 5 days.

If you have time to do 50% every 4 days, then I say go for it.... but why not just change an extra 25% water and do 75% every 4 days, that will be better. You're allready doing the work and what is another 25%? Clean water is always best.

                    50% weekly, 75+% bi-weekly if I missed the weekly.

Always buffer using Bakingsoda because Pasadena water has very little KH, but does come for the tap 7.8

With the amount of baking soda I add, and some tang salts, I am usually buffered good thru mid 8's

Whatever you are doing for buffering and how you do, just keep doing it.

Consistantcy is the key, and consitant clean water..

Sage advice that I shall take...

The reason I was asking is because I'm a little paranoid that they won't grow as well/quickly in a 55. I won't be able to get them into a 75 until Jan or Feb. So I figured if I was a madwoman about waterchanges in the interim that they would grow just fine. They're the third variant to be held in transit there. The moop juvies grew ok and the Ilangi grew like wildfire at 50%/wk. But the dubs will be in there for a few months longer, so I will do 150%/wk. Not hella hard, no biggie actually.
