I have to agree with johson on this one ... when i first got my trophs lost a couple to aggresion for this reason .... but if it works for you then it works... just keep an eye out for stragglers hanging out in the corners or near the top of the tank.Originally posted by myjohnson View Postreef style rock setting can work.
some have found the hard way that it doesn't.
Generally, two rock piles on each side work better.
but they your fishes.

what would be wrong with losing a few stragglers...Isnt that just survival of the fittest? Or can it lead to a chain effect and always end up with at least one "straggling"?250gallon-Wild Angels, community

Sure. But why waste the cash? You've gone out of your way to spend this much on a nice colony already, why not try to take full advantage of every single one?Originally posted by newb View Postwhat would be wrong with losing a few stragglers...Isnt that just survival of the fittest? Yeah, it can be survival of the fittest in some cases, but it all comes down to the ratio. Have you vented them yet?

I havent personally yet...but when I ordered I was assured by allison at cichlidandherps.net(where they came from) that there was a 7:24 ratio. I think its actually now an 8:24 ratio cause I counted 32 when putting in the tank.250gallon-Wild Angels, community

Even the most experienced person at venting Tropheus is going to have a lot of trouble venting any fish under 3.5" and be able to tell for certain male or female. Unspawned females are going to look very close to males.
It is uncommon to get better than 1M/3F or 1M/2F in Wild Tropheus I would say the best is usually 1/4 from the wild but sometimes deals like this do appear.
Just be aware that some of those "females" may turn out to be males when they get to 3.5 to 4 inches380G For Sale $3000 Acrylic tank & stand
