Re: Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center field trip

Patty and I met Ken, Mark, and KC at the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center in San Marcus at Texas State University. Leona Hazelwood and Roxie Smeal were excellant hosts. Leona Hazelwood conducted the tour with plenty of interruptions from us asking questions to learn about the history of the center and the fish as well as the genetics. She also demonstrated the artificial insemanation technique quite a few times. I can hardly wait to try it at home. I believe we can actually do it. I hope Ken talked Leona and Roxie into joining the club.

Ken and Mark bought some nice albino swords and I brought them back and tanked them up for safe keeping so they could do some more traveling. Patty bought some Xiphophorus Hellerii, Belize with collection data. I bought some Xiphophorus couchianus with collection data. They are the plainest fish they had but I want them because they are extinct in the wild. KC ask why they don't just put them back where they came from. I explained that the farmers pumped too much water out of the ground so the springs dried up so they have no water to go back into. We cannot just put them anywhere because they might threaten some other fish. I don't think he and I were really satisfied with my answer. We may have to plan a safari to Mexico some day to investigate a little further.

    We had fun!

sounds like yall had a blast i wish you luck with your new livebearers. interesting to have something that no longer exists in the wild.
      Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Thank you very much. We did see some rocks in San Marcus mostly in peoples yards but it was very dry. The corn looked like it had died and the cotton was stunted from lack of water so the farmers were not tilling the ground. I looked for someone bulldozing but did not see much going on. Ken was looking for rocks too and he went on to visit some relatives so I will ask him if he found anything when he comes back.
