  • Coleto Creek Safari Trip 7/28/07

The Houston Livebearers Association (HLA) and Texas Area Killifish Organization (TAKO) announce a joint Collecting Trip/Safari to Coleto Saturday, July 28, 2007. Interested hobbyists will meet in Victoria, Texas at 11:00 AM at the Siesta Restaurant at 2505 Houston Highway, Victoria, TX 77901 (telephone number 361.578.9937. After lunch, the safari will depart for Coleto Creek (about 25 minutes away) to collect as long as the group wishes. For those who wish, a late side trip will be available to the Guadalupe River at Victoria if the river is not flooding (this river has treacherous currents when the water is high).

Coleto Creek is a sandy bottomed, spring fed, clear, coastal stream. The creek bottom is public land and access will be from an abandoned low water bridge with ample parking available. The creek’s base water flow is from hard, alkaline springs. It has many tributaries that only flow during rainy times. The water is clear and the footing ranges from hard sand to pebbles in the main channel. Side channels and tributaries have silty bottoms. Together the creek and its tributaries offer a wide range of environments including deep still pools, gravel riffles, etc. Fish species to be found include mollies, killifish (including the southern most natural population of Fundulus chrysotus), stonerollers, darters, sunfish, catfish, silversides, minnows, shad, cichlids, gars, etc. Some typically estuarine species such as mullet and blue crab are often found.

Seine nets will be provided, but safari members should bring other nets, boxes, bags, etc. Each safari member should have a current Texas fishing license.

To get to Victoria from Houston simply take US 59 South 110 miles. Exit on Business 59 and the restaurant will be several miles on the left.

I probably won't be able to participate but I can give the area a reference.  My Grandparents had a farm in Victoria and when we would go there for summer vacation the Coleto Creek is one of the places we enjoyed most.  I can still see the clear water and sandy bottom in my mind.  My Aunt and Uncle now live on the farm but I don't get to see them very often.

Probably just be easier to get the "Resident All Water Fishing", that way all your bases are covered in case you get into some of brackish water hunting fish or plants.

Everyone is welcome. It is not necessary to be a member of the Houston Livebearers Association or the Texas Area Killifish Organization to go on this trip. Membership in both clubs is free if anyone cares to join.

This trip sounds like fun!  Had a good time a couple of years ago when HAS and TAKO went collecting way up NE. We netted some really pretty Fundulus chrysotus which went into my communities and did very well. I'll be coming along for the fish and scenery.

I'll help out on the gas. Susan's planning on going, too. Since I'm right off 59, we could meet at my house. Gotta go get my fishing license at WalMart this week.
                      Good times.   :)

                        Howdy,

Is there a current head count on who will be there?  Mark and I will be going.  Here is my cell phone 409-771-3305.  We are looking forward to the trip.

I see the Victoria area got 3" of rain this morning so the second part of the trip might be called off.  I hope the weather is nice on Saturday!  later, ken/mark
