  • Female Betta Splendens Tail Types

In the beginning there were Plakats (biting fish) a greenish brown short fined fish that lived in ditches & rice paddies of Siam (Thailand). The males were territorial and aggressive and fortunes were bet on fights between these males. But breeders isolated colors and soon red would fight blue and there were many brightly colored bettas. Foreign travelers were impressed and Betta Splendens (beautiful Warrior) spread through the known world.

After color isolation, breeders discovered a long finned male and the dominant gene for the long flowing tail is now know as Veil Tail bettas. This is the standard narrow tail but longer. But, the female’s fins remained short. Current usage has translated Plakat to mean short finned betta of any tale type

The next major development was a gene that caused the rays in the tail to split in to 2 rays making the tail wider. Then it doubled again to 4, then 8, and now 16. Even now, breeders are working on producing 32 rays, an OHM (over half moon).

    • How to Train a Puffer to Eat Pellets
      by madugo
As some of you puffer keepers know, puffers are so attractive, and full of personality. Each puffer is so unique, with its own personality and habits that you may never find in another puffer. So like I've said before, puffers are like puppy dogs in the aquarium rather than fishes. ...

    • 10 Gallon Aquarium Suggestions
      by black_knight
Once upon a time, the standard advice from advanced hobbyist to the novice was bigger is better. Buy the biggest tank you afford. But then came the birth of the nano and pico tank/desktop tank hobby, and suddenly 10 gallons wasn't so small. With better filter technology and attention being brought on smaller species of fish, you've got so much to choose from. ...

    • Understanding CO2 and pH
      by wesleydnunder
OK, first pH. The ph scale is from 0 to 14. Pure distilled water has a pH of 7, called neutral. pH below 7 is called acid. pH above 7 is called basic. Water is made up of hydrogen ions (seen as hyrdronium ion H3O) and hydroxyl ions (OH). If there is an equal amount of hydrogen and hydroxyl, the pH is 7. More hydrogen ions than hydroxyl and the solution is acid. More hydroxyl ions than hydrogen and the solution is basic.

The pH scale is a logarithmic scale, which means each step is a...

    • Guide to collecting fish
      by Sea-agg09
I figure I should share some background from my collecting experience... Collecting is terrible. In freshwater systems, it’s bloody cold, muddy as hell, and you smell about like you look by the end of it all. Unfortunately for my girlfriend, I love it. Unfortunately, collecting requires some pretty specific equipment if you plan to do anything outside your county. Fortunately, it’s all pretty cheap and anyone with a fish tank probably has most of the supplies. The biggest piece of e...
