Xenotilapia, come from Lake Tanganyika. There are quite a few species of them, VERY colorful when breeding. They are a small sand sifting goby-like fish.
When I say colorful, think lights going on and off in the fish with the colors appearing as if they are vibrant acrylic paints splashing across their silvery/white bodies.
They can be kept in very sparse tanks, with just some fine sand as substrate and some shells in a corner for the females to seek shelter near. Undemanding in this respect.
Also, can eat pretty much anything, breeding can be instigated with heavy mysis feedings and meaty foods. Carnivores.
They are sand sifters, traveling in groups moving along the sandy bottom, gobbling up the sand and sifting it, looking for small crustaceans.
They have a really comical expression, gobbling up sand and peering all around at the same time, very active.
When breeding occurs, a male will make a pit in the sand and attract a female with dress colors. Interesting to note, the different species have slight variations in the shapes of their pits!
Also to note, these fish like BRIGHT lights, males will compete for the brightest part of a tank for breeding, which is great because they look FANTASTIC in bright light.
If I wasn't nuts for saltwater right now, I may have just convinced myself to go out and get some right now, they would look really good in that 27 acrylic tank up in the acttic....
