  • Wanted: 50-60 Fish

I work at Houston Community College and we recently received a donated tank and its time to start stocking it with fish. The higher ups would like to have it stocked with about 50-60 fish and they have to be colorful, I have more experience in saltwater so I would need your expertise in what would be best to stock it with and that the tank looks good.

I have been asked if I can handle this so before heading to a local store or getting them direct from the wholesaler I prefer to get them from a local breeder so let me know what you have and send me some prices. I will need to show this information to the to higher ups so the more information you send me the better chances you have.

    Size of fish
    etc...

Oh man!!!! I wish this was my project. When I had the responsibility to stock display tanks at A&M, I did a tank full of SA and CA. This setup screams African to me though. Good luck

        Cardinal Tetra:
        Size: 1"-1.5"
        Temperament: Non-Aggressive
        Water temperature:
        Cost: Range from $1-2 each
Side Info: Do best in schools of at least 6, the bigger the school, the more impressive they look. (Must have a well established tank to attempt keeping these)
        Water Parameters: 75-78°F; pH 6.0 – 7.5

        Rummy Nose Tetra:
        Size: 1.5"-2"
        Temperament: Non-Aggressive
        Cost: $1-3 each
Side info: Same as the Cardinal Tetra
        Water Parameters: 75-78°F; pH 6.0 – 7.5

        German Blue Ram:
        Size: 2"-2.7"
Temperament: Peaceful, but since they are cichlids, some aggression may be present.
Cost: $4-10 each depending on size and where you get them from.
Water Parameters: 75-85degrees F. pH value of 5-7 is desirable, but a stable pH is best.

Neon Tetra(Looks very similar to the Cardinal Tetra but is much hardier):
Size: 1"-1.3"(The norm being around 1")
        Temperament: Non-Aggressive
Cost: $1-2 each depending on where they are purchased
Side info: Same as the Cardinal or Rummy Nose
Water Parameters: 68 - 80°F, 5.0 – 7.0 (Adapt very well to any pH level)

        Glofish:
        Size: 1"-1.7"
Temperament: Non-aggressive but may nip at other fish
        Cost: $5-$10
Side Info: These are a genetically modified fish. They are made from inserting a specific gene of a Jelly fish into the DNA of a Zebra Danio before the eggs ever hatch. The larger the group they are kept in, the less likeliness of nipping taking place. Come in colors ranging from red, green, yellow, and blue.
Water Parameters: Very adaptable to most water. Avoid extremes. 70-85degrees F.

        Guppy:
        Size: Males; 2", Females; 2.5"
        Temperament: Non-Aggressive
Cost: 10cents-$1.50(Depending on where they're bought and what color variant they are)
Side info: Males tend to be more colorful and smaller than females. Prolific breeders.
Water Parameters: 70-80degrees F. Adapt well to most water types.

        Molly:
        Size: 2"-2.5"
        Temperament: Non-Aggressive
        Cost: $1-$4
Side info: Come in a variety of colors and sizes. Lyretails, Balloon bodies, Sailfin and Swordtails are a few varients. Also a very prolific breeder.
Water Parameters: 75-80degrees F. Adapts well to most water types.

This is just a few things that came to mind. I do not sell any fish but I figured I'd help with your choice anyway. Hope this helps.

Good looking tank! You could go with cichlids or community fish in a tank like this. I think the filtration may be the biggest determining factor. If you have extremely good filtration, then cichlids would be excellent. If the filtration is less than that, then I'd suggest community fish.

If you go with community fish, I could donate some pelvicachromis (kribensis, a dwarf cichlid) which generally prefer a planted tank, but should do well in this setup. However, if you go with cichlids (not dwarfs), then the pelvicachromis wouldn't stand a chance.

Heeheehee I was crackin up about that too... the guy with the monster tanks with the jardinis, bichirs, and dats lists out the tiniest fishies. I was surprised you didn't have microrasboras on that list!
