    Re: Discus for sale

Is that a Red Melon in your avatar?  How much are you asking for what you have left?  What size are the ones that you have left?

      Re: Discus for sale

The fish in the avatar is a pigeon blood variant. Red melons are a solid reddish orange as adults.

        Re: Discus for sale

ChiroHorn is correct the one in the avatar is a Pigeon Blood. I have a pair of them for a couple on months now but no luck breeding them yet.
If you buy more then four I will give aprice break. They are not to much bigger then when I first posted.
Discus are slow growers. From birth to fully grown takes around 18 months.
With proper care discus will live up to 8 years or longer.

            Re: Discus for sale

It would depend on how many would like to keep & what stage of life they are in & how often are you willing to do the water changing.

I had a 75 gallon fully planted with 18 discus in it. However the rule of thumb is 1 discus per 10 gallons of water. The sizes range from 2" to 6" discus. I had it over double the amount of filtration that is required with doing 50% water changing twice a week & cleaned the canisters out once a month.
            Discus love low bio loads.

If you need anymore info i can post what I have found out that has worked for me in the past. The two most important things with discus are stable water & low bio load.

That works, somewhere I heard you need atleast a 75gl to house them. I have two 55gl one short and one tall. My wife likes the discuss so I wanted to see if I could place them in a 55gl.

              Thank for the info

As long as its a 4" tank it will work for discus. They do need a some space to swim back & forth in.

Hey Walter, you have anymore of the turquoise ones like the one I won at the auction? I think the singleton is lonely so I wanna get another for it if not another two.

                        Re: Discus for sale

I really like discus and would love to have a tank set up with a few.  Are they like the africans and will cross breed or is it ok to keep different species together?

Welcome to the box, we have a member here that has a lot of experience with Discus, and I'm sure in a matter of time, he will be happy to share that experience with you.   I'm new and not too familar with Discus, but again, welcome.

                            Re: Discus for sale

Well welcome to the box Bowerystyle (Heather). You can keep any type of discus with any other discus. Yes they will cross breed when they become semi adults to adults. This is how they get so many different types of discus.
I have a 180 I just setup with several different types of discus in it.

HoustonFishBox is an online community dedicated to bringing together people and their fish in Houston, Southeast Texas, and beyond.

Its hard to see the different types in it. Right now I have been focusing more on the layout. I will try to get some pics with the different types of discus for you.
If you like you can come by this weekend so you will get an ideal.

                              Re: Discus for sale

Thanks for the welcome.  I have been here before and used a different name GAK1 but I forgot  my password and my email changed so I just made a new name.  Juan is my husband and we have been playing on this forum every day.  I must admit that I am beginning to feel like the fish box is the devil!  LOL  We don't get any sleep anymore, and all our money is gone to buying fish items mostly due to this forum!  But thanks again for the welcome.  I love discus and was looking to trying a tank for them.  I am not interested in raising them, just having them for looks.  If I did manage to get a nice breeding pair and some babies then I wouldn't complain!

If I were to keep a few different species and they were to cross breed, are the hybrids desirable or not very desirable as is the case with Africans?  Your pictures were great and I would love to eventually get with you to see them in person!

No they are not like the Africans.
Discus are crossed breed all the time, That is how the development of different stains are made.  All the wild discus have what we cal stress bars on them. Today some discus do not ever show any stress bars on them. This is caused from cross breeding.
I think this is one of the main reasons discus people keep them. Cause they be able to develop their own strain of discus.
